Notes: I never read the Civil War series, all my knowledge of it came from the internet and friends telling me about it, so I'm really sorry if I make any mistakes. This story takes place almost immediately after Civil War, meaning the events in comics like The Amazing Spider-man after Civil War never happened. This includes the Fallen Son miniseries.

Prologue – Hidden Fury

Steve Rogers, Captain America, was probably the greatest man who ever lived. He believed in freedom, freedom to wear a mask and protect those dear to you. And those dear to other people. He might have gone against the law, but he did this for something he believed in, something that saved lives. Now he's gone, and no-one who wears a mask is safe, unless they join the government, unless they do anything and everything that they're told to do. I used to be director of S.H.I.E.L.D, I used to make the rules, decide what these people, these heroes were allowed to do. But that was a long time ago. Now the heroes who want to protect others, have to waste precious time protecting themselves from the authorities. All of this is thanks to Tony Stark, the new director of S.H.I.E.L.D. He says that if people want to protect others or help those who need help, they have to become a government agent, and do whatever Stark tells them. I know these people better than Tony, and I know that signing up for Tony's superhuman army is the last thing some of them would do, it goes against what they believe in, and revealing their identity publicly would result in chaos for them and everyone they hold dear. Peter Parker is a good example of that, he did what Tony said, and told the whole world that he was Spider-man. Then Peter changed his mind, realised he was on the wrong side. He got away from Stark with his family, who, as you can imagine, wasn't too happy about this change of heart. Peter joined an underground organisation of non registered heroes, lead by none other than the great Captain America. After Cap died and the Super Human Registration Act was passed, Peter had nowhere to go. There are hundreds of people like Peter out there, now I'm going to find them all, give them a home, a safe refuge from the constant threat of Tony Stark. I might not be 'Nick Fury: Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.' anymore; I might not have the authority to offer these heroes refuge anymore; I might be breaking the law by doing what I do. But I don't give a shit, I'm gonna do it anyway. But most of these heroes don't trust me; I need someone who everyone knows and trusts, a symbol of freedom that all the heroes will recognise. I need Steve Rogers. Only problem is, he's dead. But we can fix that.
