When John Watson first met Sherlock Holmes, it was on the train on the way to Hogwarts. It was an eventful meeting, one brought to an abrupt halt by a resigned "Petrificus Totalus!" aimed at them by a black-haired seventh year wearing a red and gold tie and a resigned scowl.

"When you have been sorted," he tells them, "that will be ten points from each of your houses. Now, I suggest you get your robes on. We're nearly at Hogwarts."

He waited until Sherlock had stalked off in one direction and John had hurried off muttering about Harry killing him before rolling his eyes. As far as he, James Potter knew, Harriet Watson would probably have cheered him on, given that he knew that just a year previously she had given young Sherlock's older brother such a creative hexing that Madam Pomphrey had taken hours rather than minutes to fix the results. Flitwick had secretly been pleased as punch, he had heard.

The second time Sherlock Holmes met John Watson was on the boat ride across the lake, where the pair found themselves in the same boat. They weren't in the same boat for long and much to Sherlock's disappointment, the Giant Squid magnanimously returned them both to the boat rather than trying to snack on the buffoon who had tried to black his eye earlier.

It was also the fastest-earned detention since James Potter had met Lucius Malfoy, they were informed as they dripped pitifully in front of the fire in the Headmaster's office after the feast. Professor Dumbledore had looked between the pair with something akin to resignation.

"Mr Holmes, Mr Watson, I am going," he informed them, "to presume that this was merely an excess of youthful high spirits and that there was no malice aforethought."

Sherlock smiled smugly as he noticed John's brows draw together.

Dumbledore cleared his throat.

"To that end, we shall be putting your youthful enthusiasm to good use. You will be assisting Mr Filch in cleaning the trophies in the trophy room for the next three nights. Now, you, Mr Holmes, should head to the dungeons with the Slytherin prefect who is awaiting you at the bottom of the stairs. Mr Watson, your sister is here to take you up to Gryffindor. I trust that this will be the last I am to hear of incidents of this kind?"

With a glance at each other, the boys nodded, barely waiting to be dismissed before they turned and fled.
