Dís looked out from her home in the Blue Mountains. Her sons Fili and Kili were on a quest with her brother, their uncle. She hoped they were safe. There were so many dangers in the world they live in. Dangers that often hunt them. The line of Durin.

Months later...

Dís refused everyone's comfort. No comfort was enough to combat her grief. Her sons were dead. Gone like their uncle, never to return. She sobbed. Her sons and brother were gone. Her only family. Her grandfather had died at Moria, murdered by Azog. Her father was blinded and disappeared in search of the Lonely Mountain. Her brother Frerin died at the Battle of Azanulbizar. Then her husband had died. Now her sons and her brother were gone too. All died fighting in the Battle of the Five Armies.

Why was her life so miserable? She had often asked herself. She had lost everyone that was dear to her. She had lost her home. She had lost her happiness. She had lost everything.

She had once been happy. She used to live in a palace as a princess. She used to play with her carefree brothers. At the Blue Mountains, she had met her husband. He gave her joy. And more so when they had Fili and Kili. But now, all this seemed to be a distant past. A mere dream.

Eventually, she went to Erebor to visit their graves. So young, her sons, thought Dís. Thorin, Fili and Kili had died honourably. Her brother managed to reclaim their homeland - what their grandfather and father could not do. They could have lived here happily. She cursed the dragon Smaug. If it weren't for him, none of this would have happened. But there was nothing she could do to change that.

Dís had tried to persuade Thorin not to attempt the quest. But he was stubborn. He too wanted to go back to h their homeland. Fili and Kili had not grown up there but had heard many tales of its splendour. They to had the burning desire to go there. She could not stop them. They were grown dwarves. Old enough to make their own decisions.

But she had often wondered what if they all had not gone on the quest. They could have continued their lives in the Blue Mountains. They could have still remained as a family. They could have been happy. But what could she do? She cannot change the past. And she does not have to will to live on. Dís knew that she will never recover. She will remain in her grief until the end of her days.
