Epithet

Freak.

The magical world cost her her sister. Petunia and her word. Her epithet for her little sister. Freak.

With that word, Lily realised she'd chosen him over her. Friend over sister. One world for another.

At first, she'd thought that it was the price for magic. That she could have this world of wonder and magic, but she had to accept that her sister no longer wanted to be around her. That her sister would never call her Lils again. Never call her Lily, or little sister. That she would always be a freak in the world of her sister's.

From the moment, he told her she was a witch, it cost her her sister. He struck out at Petunia and she didn't protect her. That was when it passed over. Before, it was always hers and Tuney's. Then it became hers and Sev's. Now it, belongs to her and him, and Petunia will never want to be a part of it. She will never laugh when Lily does something strange, and turn it into a game. Now she will announce it freakish, and shun it, the world it belongs to, and her sister along with it.

Lily tried to pretend it was worth it for so long. For five years Hogwarts, magic, witches and wizards and her friends and Severus were a fair trade-off. Most of the time, it was, if anything can be fair for the loss of her sister.

But in the end, she realised it had never been worth it. All she'd done was trade one easily crumpled friendship for another. One insult for another.

All she got for choosing him over her, all that she gave him for him and his world, was an epithet of his own.

That was her consolation prize. Her reward, for forever pinning herself as a freak in Petunia's eyes.

Mudblood.
