It was a normal day in the ED Adam was busy in resus and Jessica and Linda were in cubicles treating an elderly lady who had fallen down some steps. After treating her and discharging her Jessica and Linda walked to the staffroom, as they walked Linda hiccuped making Jessica laugh.
"You got hiccups", Jessica said laughing.
"I hic know", Linda replied.
Jessica kept laughing each time Linda hiccuped, which annoyed Linda a little. Linda kept squeaking which was making Jessica laugh. Tess entered and Linda hiccuped as Jessica laughed.
"Oh dear", Tess said as Linda hiccuped again.
Jessica went to resus as her break was over and worked with Adam. Adam smiled as she entered and then continued what he was doing as Jessica just smiled.
"What you so happy about", Adam asked.
"Linda got hiccups now she can't stop squeaking", Jessica said.
"So she's as small as a mouse and now sounds like a mouse so Linda is a mouse", Fletcher said laughing but Jessica looked annoyed at his joke.
"Linda is a human being not a mouse she can't help being small or how she hiccups ok", Jessica said angry.
"Ok", Fletcher said leaving.
"That wasn't like you", Adam said.
"Sorry, just don't want her getting upset", Jessica replied.
"Linda seems happy to me", Adam answered.
"Ok", Jessica replied.
Zoe and Tess were trying to get rid of Linda's hiccups and Zoe thought of a solution that had worked in the past so tried it on Linda whilst Tess just watched Zoe do it to see if it really did work or not. Zoe went to the staffroom opened her locker and then her purse and took twenty pounds out and walked back to Linda's cubicle.
"Ok Linda if you hiccup one more time you can have this twenty pound note", Zoe said.
"hic", Linda hiccuped.
Zoe gave her the twenty pound note and wasn't pleased. Tess followed her as they left Linda in the cubicle.
"That's worked everytime", Zoe said.
"Maybe she's got something wrong with her", Tess said.
"ADAM", Zoe called.
Adam came over and looked at Linda as she hiccuped and then went to find Jessica as she was with Linda last night as they were having a girly night in. Adam brought Jessica outside Linda's cubicle then questioned her about what Linda has been like the past few days because Adam thought he might have a solution to Linda's bad case of hiccups.
"She's been out of breath more quickly and a little confused and weak", Jessica said.
"Kidney failure, hiccups, out of breath, weak, confused they all link", Adam said.
"She is going to be ok", Jessica asked worried for her friend.
"Yes", Adam replied.
Adam went and broke the news to Linda as she turned to cry so no one could see she was crying. Zoe, Adam and Tess left so Jessica could try and calm Linda down. Jessica ignored the little squeaks Linda made while she cried.
"Am hic I going to die", Linda asked crying and then hiccuped.
"No of course not, Adam will make you better", Jessica replied.
"Really", Linda said and then hiccuped while wiping away her tears.
"Sure", Jessica replied.
The next day Adam started to treat Linda as Jessica watched anxiously from the side. It was a big day for Linda. Jessica never left her side. When Linda woke up Jessica hugged her and gave her some water. Her hiccups had now gone but Linda was still poorly.
A few weeks later Linda was back to normal.
