I've been wanting to write for The Flash fandom for a while now, I just needed to build up the courage/motivation.
A very short, VERY late entry to simplysnowbarry's Snowbarry Valentine 2019 Challenge
(Yes, I know, it's almost May)
Prompt: "I was expecting chocolate or flowers. But this is nice too."
Caitlin stared at the man in front of her, her mouth agape in a moment of shock. As her brown eyes locked with his soft green ones, their entire relationship played out in her mind.
The months following the Particle Accelerator explosion were some of the worst months of Caitlin's life, if not the worst. Her fiancé was gone, killed after sacrificing himself to save countless others. Her once promising future as a bio-engineer was over as blame started surfacing in the wake of the explosion and she and Cisco were the only two to stay loyal to their employer Harrison Wells. Her grief, anger, and sadness at the situation was so overwhelming that she shut herself off from everyone else, not even letting her best friend past her icy exterior. Then, to make matters worse, Dr. Wells tasked them with taking care of one Barry Allen who, at the time, seemed to be your average yet extremely unlucky guy who'd been struck by lightning and left in a coma.
For roughly nine months, she cared for Barry, running countless tests to try and wake him from his coma only for nothing to work. However, that all changed the day Barry woke from his coma a changed man as 'Poker Face' played in the background. From what few tests she was able to perform before Dr. Wells whisked Barry away (she never got her urine sample), it seemed nine months of coma-induced inactivity had little effect on Barry's body.
They soon learned that was not the case.
Barry was a metahuman, the fastest man alive, and there were many more like him. Together, Team Flash protected the citizens of Central City (and the world) from metahuman and extranormal threats. They also protected and helped each other.
Through unrequited love, 'dead' fiances coming back to life only to die again (for real) a short time later, crushing guilt, evil speedsters, lost loved ones, and even cold powers, her and Barry's bond, one forged by mutual understanding of heartbreak and loss, grew stronger.
They tiptoed along the line of coupledom yet never crossed it, much to the annoyance of their friends and family.
Thanks to a kick in the butt from Cisco, Barry asked Caitlin out on an official date. That one date turned into many more and eventually led them to this moment.
"I was expecting chocolates or flowers. But this is nice too."
Barry laughed. "So is that a yes?"
Caitlin smiled a breathtaking smile and nodded. "Yes."
The biggest smile stretched across Barry's face as he stood from his previous position on bended knee. He slipped the beautiful diamond ring on Caitlin's finger, pulled her tightly into a hug and sealed the proposal—and their future together—with a kiss.
