Reminiscing

Summary: Sofia looks back in her journal from nearly two years ago and ponders on the events in Avalor that changed her life (and the lives of those around her) for the better. (Requested by cdbazemore98)

Disclaimer: I do not own Sofia the First or Elena of Avalor.

A/N: A reader named cdbazemore98 messaged me a few months ago asking if I could write a story in which there's a discussion of the events that occurred with Elena and Avalor. I opted to make it something of a flashback sequence/journal entry so that it would fall in line with my stories, so here you have it. 😊 Hope you enjoy!

*Story*

Sofia sighed and plopped onto her bed, burying her face in her pillows and letting out an exhausted sigh. Exams were piling up at school, and she seemed to study for hours nonstop each night at this point. It was ridiculous how much a pre-teen was expected to learn in such a short amount of time. In fact, she'd just love to see some of the adults try it. They always expressed how important education was, and while she agreed, she couldn't help but feel that this level of studying was getting a bit out of hand.

The princess sat up and gazed sleepily around her room, searching for something. "Hmm…" She reached behind her bed and pulled out her purple journal labelled Sofia's Stories. She flipped through some of the older entries dating back to when she first entered the castle. She settled on a page that had a sketch of someone she never knew could be possible to have as a friend: Princess Elena.

A smile graced the girl's face as she began reading and reminiscing about the trip she and her family had taken a few years ago to restore the old kingdom to its former glory; most importantly from that trip, though, was freeing the older princess from the legendary amulet. Just reading over her journal entries soothed her mind and made her forget her strife or studying for a little while…

Dear Journal,

I don't know what to say… I honestly can't even believe I'm writing this. You'd think I'd be used to magical things happening by now, but this is WAY more than just magic at this point. It turns out, there was a princess who had been living in my amulet all this time—41 years, actually! That's a long time… Her name is Princess Elena, and she's the rightful ruler of a kingdom called Avalor. Yep, you guessed it: my amulet is based on that kingdom. Pretty neat, huh?

Well, we had to defeat a wicked sorceress named Shuriki in order to help Elena take back the throne. It took a lot of team work and clever acting on our part, but we managed to do it. I met some amazing new friends (Elena and Mateo, for instance) and a new species of animal called jaquins. Did you know that jaquins can be understood by everyone? I thought that was so neat…

Anyway, we just got back home from that trip, and…well… Let's just say I had a lot of explaining to do to my family. They now know about the amulet and its powers, and they actually seem interested and fascinated rather than shocked and afraid. Well, Amber already knew about its powers…sort of. That whole Ivy/dragonfly issue sort of spoiled that. So, I told them as much as I could about the amulet without giving away some of my more important secrets, such as my ability to talk to animals. I don't know if they'll ever be able to find out about that secret, but I'm not risking it. I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't talk to Clover anymore…

While the trip was fun sometimes, it was mostly full of adventure and scary moments. Like, my parents and Amber and James being locked away in the palace dungeon… Shuriki using her powers to scare the Avaloran people into basically worshiping her… Oh, and let's not forget her hatred of music. WHO hates MUSIC? Seriously? Even every bad guy or girl I've met up to this point loves music and especially loves singing about evil plans. Shuriki must be a new type of villain…

Sofia giggled at her entry's ponderings before shaking her head. Oh, if only her past self knew just how true that really was…

I think one of the neatest things that came out of this trip was seeing how everyone came together and worked together to solve a really big problem. Elena had every reason not to trust anyone after what happened to her parents, but she finally saw that we were on her side and just wanted to help her. It wasn't just Mateo and me… It wasn't even just my family. The WHOLE KINGDOM came together to get rid of Shuriki. I think that's awesome! If Enchancia ever faces a situation like that (hopefully not), I hope our kingdom would do the same. We have some pretty amazing people here anyway, so I think people will really rise to the occasion if they need to.

Well, that's about all I wanted to say. Oh, my amulet is pink now… That's going to take some getting used to. It's so weird to think that Elena used to be trapped inside of it, and now she's back in her own homeland. It sort of feels empty now, knowing that. BUT she's better with her family and friends than stuck in a necklace for another 41 years. I'm happy for her, and I hope I get to meet her again!

Sofia

Sofia shut the book and smiled, caressing the cover with a thoughtful sigh. She'd stayed in communication with the other princess, but as time went on she found herself more and more focused on her own kingdom and life. She supposed it was only natural. Elena would always be something of a guardian for her, but she was growing up. She'd have to start solving her own problems and being who she was meant to be in her own way. Even her amulet had begun responding to Sofia for once. It was a wonderful turn of events.

She hid the journal behind her bed again before lying on her back, staring at the canopy of her bed. "I should really get back to studying…" She glanced outside, where she saw the stars just barely beginning to form through the darkening blanket of the skies. When was the last time she just…looked at the stars? She heard a knock on her door and turned toward it. "Come in!"

Amber walked inside and grinned toward her younger sister. "There's supposed to be a meteor shower tonight. You should come watch it with us."

"But I need to study, Amber…" She blinked as the blonde grabbed her arm and tugged her off the bed. "Amber!"

"Sofia, you've studied hours each night the last few weeks. Give it a rest, would you? Besides, a little atmospheric phenomenon will be good for you!"

Sofia giggled as she relented and allowed the older girl to pull her along. "That's an excuse I haven't heard yet."

"Oh, trust me—you'll hear it again. Come on!"

The door to Sofia's room shut, and while the room lay in stillness and darkness once more, the memories of yesteryear lingered and danced just out of reach.
