It didn't take a genius to figure out why she always stayed behind during the lunch break, eyes always flickering around the courtyard in search of the blue ones that kept her up at night.

Whenever she found them, they were either sad or confused. Blair, the woman with it all always had his attention in the beginning. But then it became apparent that they strayed toward the blonde girl, Serena.

Hopeless, Jenny tried not to think about it. But it was hard. Very.

Nate had no clue she even existed.

And today wasn't looking any better. Flying out the door like a madwoman thanks to her clock not letting her know it was time to get up; Jenny nearly impaled herself into moving cab that didn't get the whole pedestrian-right thing. Her books went flying up into the air and all over the street as strong arms pulled her back from harm's way. "Are you alright?" Warm, like liquid coasted down her spine as she looked up to find those blues concerned – over her!

"I-I'm alright. Thank you."

Nate leaned down to pick up her books which she abruptly dropped down as well. "Really you don't have to. It was my fault and-"

"It's alright. Besides, everybody knows cabs have a knack for almost nailing someone."

Jenny gave a short laugh. "I guess they really like hood ornaments or something."

They both laughed as they stood. Handing over her books, Nate brushed back a wisp of blonde hair that'd fallen in her eyes. "Just be more careful next time. I doubt anyone would like a squashed Humphrey in the middle of the street."

She rolled her eyes playfully. "Yeah. They'd bitch about having to clean it up."

"I meant it would be a real shame to lose something as pretty as you for an impatient idiot." Nate whispered charmingly enough that her cheeks flushed. He touched her shoulder and gave it a squeeze. "Be more careful next time alright?"

She nodded, unable to speak.

Satisfied that she would be safe, Nate stepped back and headed off to school. Unaware that he left behind a heart that beat for only him.
