Heartbreak

Pain.

It was all she felt.

All she'd felt for months.

And she knew she'd feel it for many more to come.

He had been her other half. Her safe haven.

And now...he was gone. Just gone. His last moments had been in a pool of blood and debris as she tried to heal him, though deep down she knew her attempts were futile.

She remembered who'd killed him...ironic, really. The very person he had saved from a Killing Curse several months earlier...now too jealous that he had her heart that he believed killing him would bring her back.

Tears gathered in her eyes as her mind replayed the moment, the memory more vivid then ever. She remembered looking into his deep gray eyes as the spark she'd loved had slowly diminished.

Oh, his eyes... She'd stared into them countless times, losing herself in the swirling depths of mercury. His silky white-blond hair fell in front some days, when he didn't gel it back. She'd preferred it that way. She remembered exactly when she had told him that...it had been long ago, before the war had truly started and they'd been separated.

*Flashback*

He stood facing the opposite way when she arrived at the top of the Astronomy Tower. Quietly, she walked over and slipped her arms around him. He turned slowly.

"You're early today" she mumbled against his chest.

He smiled lightly, eyes sparkling, hair dancing in the wind. "I know" he answered "I came here before our meeting to think."

"About what?"

He lost his smile, pain appearing in his eyes. "You..well us, really. What are we going to do when the war truly starts? I can't join the light, no matter how much I want to, because Mother would be killed. But I won't let you go. I don't want to... and I need you by my side at all times." He blushed slightly at the admission.

His face softened as he looked into her eyes.

Smiling, she asked him "You really mean that?"

He nodded. Her honey-brown eyes lit up, as they always did when she was happy. Then, in an attempt to lighten the somber mood that had come over them when the topic of war was mentioned, she said "Well, if it's confession time, I'll tell you a little secret of mine. I've always loved your hair when it was free and not gelled back..." She paused slightly, and, seeing his confusion, finished her sentence hurriedly "evenbackwhenwewerestillenemiesandhatedeachother."

Upon hearing this, he smirked slightly, and then said in a loud voice "Would you mind repeating that? I don't think I quite heard you correctly."

Face reddening, she hit him on the arm and muttered "I'm sure you heard me perfectly well the first time."

He smiled and brought her face up to kiss her. Pulling away, he rested his forehead against hers before whispering

"I love you Hermione. Never forget that."

"I love you too Draco. More than anything in this world...and don't you forget it either."
