Maybe Forever

Driving home

hands grip hard the wheel,

the wheel he cannot squeeze tight enough.

Her face swims into his mind,

blurs his vision

a soft memory,

the touch of her lips

sweet and soft.

Arms around her waist

then a hand

gentle against his cheek

Jim, we can't

and his mind screams.

Why not?

It seems so wrong

not to be with her

when it's just so right

to have her in his arms.

It's perfect, but she can't

She won't

She stands firm,

shakes her head

turns her back on him

maybe forever.

Wheels turn fast,

car jerks to the side of the road.

Traffic whizzes by.

damn it, damn it, damn it!

Lets himself go

pounding fists against

the wheel,

choking,

sobbing,

head in his hands.

Rocking back

and forth,

back,

and forth.

The memories

flood his mind

and laughter floats,

sweet, sincere

through the air,

crushing him.

A cold, throbbing ache

in his chest,

and he thinks

his heart must

have turned to steel,

it is so heavy.
