Jack carefully threaded his way through the hall packed with carefree students anticipating a beautiful weekend. Greetings and laughter flew across the hallways as kids poured out of the doors and into the sunny Friday afternoon. The schoolyard emptied with unsurprising speed as Jack walked over the green lawn and admired the changes in his high school.
At his request, Hammond had given SG-1 some needed down time. After making sure that Teal'c would force Sam and Daniel to sleep, Jack had come back to where he has spent his tumultuous teenage years. Now Jack dragged his sneakers through the grass and picked out familiar sights. The whole school had been renovated and it seemed smaller than Jack remembered- especially the hallway that led to the principal's office, which he knew well.
Jack smiled and let his feet stroll without direction, wandering with no apparent purpose, but ever on a path to a specific destination. Sun glinted off stone as Jack finally stopped in a remote corner of the campus, giving the shady corner a golden hue. His smiled faded as he regarded the white marble bench that sat under a leafy tree. The carving in the stone was as crisp and black as it had been at the dedication of the bench. Jack read the name sadly and sat down, fingering the carving on the seat. His fingers traced the letters reading, 'Remember me and I am forever'.
Jack could remember the day of the dedication. He could remember the long silence after, broken only by a small sniff or a murmured prayer. His tight knit class had lost one of their own. After the crowd dispersed, the fifteen-year-old Jack walked up to the small bench, tried to burn the image into his mind and succeeded.
Jack brought his mind back to the present and fished in his back pocket. He flipped open his wallet and brought out an old, creased photo. A young, black haired boy smiled back up at him- had smiled even through his illness. Jack kept the memory of this boy close by him through everything. Ever since the fifteen-year-old had furiously stared at the bench, the memory stayed close. The quote carved in the top followed him through his life. In the following years, when more of his friends left forever, Jack gave each some eternity.
Jack's eyes lingered for a moment on the image of the smiling boy before he stuffed the wallet back in his pocket, stood up and walked away.
