Prussia was starting to think that maybe he was destined to be last.
Once, in a time long ago, he used to think that he'd always be first at everything. The moment that changed was probably the day the woman he had fallen head over heels for married the man that he disagreed with the most.
He remembered watching Hungary walk down that aisle, smiling brighter than he ever thought possible, gazing at Austria like he was the only perfect thing the world had ever created. Damn, if he didn't remember wanting her to direct that look at him instead but she didn't and he was left alone standing in a back corner trying not to be obvious.
That was the first time his confidence had wavered but it was far from the last time the universe had tried to tear him down.
For example, when World War I had started, he had expected his little brother, who had always come to him for help, to ask for advice. But, after capturing the Mediterranean country of Italy, it was almost as if Prussia had ceased to exist in his brother's eyes. Furthermore, the other countries stopped paying attention to when he was fighting them. He was part of the Axis Powers, too, in WWII but was he ever mentioned? No.
He was the last person Hungary told that she was leaving Austria.
He was the last person to realize that they had drifted so far apart during the time period that she was married that it was almost as if they never knew each other at all.
He was the last person to realize his little brother was madly in love with the brunette country known as Italy. Which also made him the last country to realize that his little brother was gay…excluding Ludwig of course because he was still in denial.
Prussia was the last person to cry over his dissolution in 1947- it hadn't really hit him what had happened until it was over. Even Lizzie and West had cried before he had, of course they were under the assumption that he would disappear, but he was still in the world alive and kicking.
After his dissolution, he was the last person anyone ever came to for help or advice because everyone was so afraid that he was suddenly fragile enough that the wrong words could kill him. He appreciated the concern but he would rather feel useful and worry over his friends' problems than feel excluded and alone.
But he was making this last thing out to seem all bad. Sure it seemed like the worst thing at first; but, that was before he realized how good being last could be. There were some things that he was last in that he would never give up.
Gilbert was the last person Lizzie talked to before she went to sleep.
Which led to him being the last or "most recent" person she confessed her love to.
He was the last person to get to feel his lips against hers.
He was the last person to hear her say yes at that altar.
He was the last thing she saw before she went to sleep.
He was both the first and the last person that her kids called Daddy.
He was the last person to tuck them in at night and the last to hear their tiny whispers of love.
Yes, there were some things that being last in rocked more than any "first" position he had ever held.
Hello, thought maybe I'd spin off the first part of this story which is called First btw. I love you guys! Please review!
