Rating: K

Timeline: Set sometime during the anime series

Word count: 250

A/N: I don't own any of these characters, and I'm making no money off this. Please don't sue, thank you kindly.

-I've only watched the anime, so this is based on that—if it isn't consistent with manga canon, I apologise.

At first glance, one would think that there was nothing there to see.

Everyone knew that that the Flame Alchemist and his second in command, easily two of the most respected officers in the army, were very close.

But then, that was nothing extraordinary, Roy Mustang was capable of inspiring fervent loyalty. His whole team was an unusually tight knit group, and they were all known to be devoted to their colonel.

No, it was in the way they behaved around each other.

For two people who were professedly so close, they were very, very careful around each other.

He never laid a friendly hand on her shoulder, as he might have with Breda and Falman.

She never leaned over him as she waited for some papers he was signing, she was always on the other side of his desk, two feet of solid wood separating them.

And they never, ever called each other by their names.

No, it was always 'Sir' for him, and 'Lieutenant Hawkeye' for her.

One would think they were only colleagues, were it not for the fact that there was always a suppressed quality to their interactions, the very air between them crackling with something unresolved, something untamed, something forbidden.

Something lurked beneath the surface, hidden away under layers of duty and silence, showing itself only in the unquestioning devotion of each of them to the other.

At first glance, one would think that there was nothing there to see.

But only at first glance.
