Summary: Vexen is walking through the halls of the Hollow Bastion castle, a definite purpose in this visit.
'The once great city of Radiant Garden, reduced to this…'

Vexen made his way through the halls of great castle that his former mentor had helped design. He could have simply teleported to his desination, but for some strange reason he could not identify, the castle's labyrinthine hallways and magical lift system brought him some comfort.

The memories linked to the emotional fragments had faded years ago.

'Such a sad state… less than a year under the Superior's control and those filthy vermin were able to overpower us.' His eyes roamed the hallways and he scowled. The walls were crumbling, revealing the inner workings of the great edifice.

At least eight years of decay, and the castle was lucky to still be structurally sound.

'It's current residents haven't helped with the preservation, either. A pity—the mechanics and engineering that make the castle run are nothing short of brilliant.' He would also mourn the loss of the grand library, which held centuries of knowledge within its many tomes.

He turned the final corner and entered what was now called the Chapel. Destroying any Heartless that stood in his way, he slowly made his way towards the computer console, where the giant Keyhole rested.

He smiled in a predatory fashion. 'There. That's what I came for.'

On the ground were several large smears of a coppery-brown substance. Dried blood.

DNA that could be used for both body and Heart replication.

'But whose blood could this be?' he wondered as he knelt down to collect samples. 'The Keybearer… or the other?' More than likely, it was both—the fight had been with edged Keyblades. Surely both teens had bled quite a bit during the battle.

If that were the case, then he would have not one, but possibly two Hearts he could replicate. Two test subjects. Two individuals whose Hearts were infinitesimally different from the other, leading to further data collection.

Vexen stood and looked at the samples he had gathered. Yes, today had been a good day. Tomorrow, he would begin the cloning.

AN: This one-shot could serve as the prequel story for Wind's Awakening, which will be going under rewrite in the very near future.
