'Goodbye' by D. Mitchell
A car pulls up to the observatory overlooking Toluca Lake and parks right by
the restrooms. The car door opens and a tall, beautiful woman steps out. She's
dressed in black with dark brown hair and a very collective stare. Her name is
Laura. She left Silent Hill with James a long time ago when he was there looking
for his late wife, Mary. After they left, James adopted Laura as Mary's dying
wish to James. James was very proud of Laura and their relationship as a
peiced-together family. Laura, now twenty-five years old, is a publisher who's
published books mainly on the forgotten town that lies beyond Toluca Lake. The
first book she published was by a man named Harry Mason, who also escaped
the town with a baby who he eventually called his own. So many things have
happened in this town to these people and she listens to their stories. She does
this because she never saw anything. She was young back then and she was
alone. During her time in Silent Hill, she was looking for Mary as well. Mary was
in the same hospital with her before Mary passed away sometime later. She
was compelled to be there for Mary, even when James refused to visit. Laura
believed Mary was still alive.
Today, she feels as though Mary is still alive, somewhere, alone.
"Mary," She begins. "I still read the letters you gave me. Everytime I read them, I
feel you holding me in your arms."
She takes a breath to hold back her tears.
"I can't remember my real parents nor do I want to. You were more of a mother
to me. The way you would smile when I would draw pictures for you or when I
would pull pranks on Rachel. I couldn't have had a happier time with anyone
else. James is growing older by the day and I feel like his emptiness is hollowing
out his soul. He misses you dearly, Mary. He wanted everything to be right
again. I know that is what you would've wanted, too."
She paces around, staring at the roadblock still constructed over the Brahms
tunnel.
"I would've loved to experience a life with the both of you as my parents. I'd
stay awake at night thinking about it, and I still do. We'd spend the holidays out
of town with friends and relatives; You and James would come to open house
night at my school to see my accomplishments; We would...would've spent
every last minute together...as a family."
She stands at the Toluca Lake entrance, staring down at the eroded stairway,
and wiping away her mascara-stained tears.
"I remember something Eddie told me when I was here. He asked me, 'What's
the point of caring for someone when they're already dead? It isn't like they'd
care for you or anything.' But, I know you still care for me, Mary. Somehow or
somewhere, you still do. Well, I have to go now. I wanted to come and visit
you to tell you one last thing..."
She slowly walks to her car, wiping away more of her tears. As she
approaches, she opens the door and stares out at the lake once more.
"I love you, mom."
As the car pulls away and onto the main road, a strong gust of wind blows
across the ground. A piece of paper flutters across the ground and lands on
the edge of the wall overlooking the lake. Amongst the tears and wrinkles, only
a few words are written:
"I'll always love you."
Sorry it took me long to post another fic..i hope you like it.
