Author's note: Well this is just a little of Harm's thoughts. I thought I should give it a try. Sorry guys this is not long stuff – it's just a little thing I had in mind. The story is set in the beginning of season 9. This story is a sort of sequel to my story "What could have been."

Harm's office, JAG Headquarters

Falls Church, Virginia

Harm was staring out of the window, his arms folded on his chest, wondering what had happened to him and his best friend lately. His life was different – a lot different, and empty. Harm missed her, her presence in his life. She was so far away. He couldn't go to her anymore when he felt sad or lost. Mac wasn't the one he could turn to anymore.

She had someone to love in her life and it wasn't him, though God knew how much he'd wished it'd been him. Harm had paid a high price for the decision he had made a couple of months ago. He had given his resignation to be able to rescue her from the hands of Sadik Fahd. It had been a mistake, though he didn't regret the choice he'd made then; if he had to do it again, he would do it the same way.

Harm had been mad at her at first, and every single conversation they had tried to have automatically turned to an argument, but once they were over it they didn't talk to each other at all... the situation between them saddened him, but what could he do? Try to talk to her? She'd pissed him off again. It seems to him that every time he'd tried to talk to her, she took every word he was saying in the wrong way.

Why did it all turn out that way? Was it too late? Was it too late for them to find each other? Had he waited too long? All these questions were spinning in his head, without a single hint of a response. And then suddenly it hit him. Maybe there was an answer to all those questions. Maybe Mac was afraid – afraid of what their relationship would be if it went to another level, of the implications it held. Maybe she wasn't ready for it then. Giving the thought a little more credit, he was now convinced that he'd found the answer and the explanation to what had happened to them.

Harm felt like a heavy weight had been taken off of his heart, and a smile made its way to the corner of his mouth. Maybe all hopes weren't gone after all. All he had to do now was convince Mac that having a relationship with him wouldn't necessarily be destined to fail. He was sure now that Mac was afraid of that. Maybe that was also the reason she'd chosen Clay above him. She felt good with him because she knew it wasn't meant to be.

A thought flashed through his mind. Two years ago, when Sturgis came to JAG headquarters in Falls Church – they were playing a one against one basketball match. He'd asked him if he had someone in his life, and he had answered No, but she's got me.

Now Harm had to find a way to make her understand that his heart was already hers, and that there was no reason to be afraid to love him – because he loved her and they were meant to be. Harm knew he had to wait for the right moment, that his time would come one day. He just had to be patient. His smile widened as he thought:

Us together as lovers is what will be one day...
