Bob says Hello

The massive form of Tartarus loomed over him. Bob, formerly known as Iapetus, fought hard alongside the giant Damasen. His friends were ascending from the pit and the button to the Doors of Death needed to be held. Bob kept the button pressed whilst fighting one handed with his broom.

It is said that when you are close to death your life flashes before your eyes. Bob experienced this now. He saw himself back when he was Iapetus. He saw the chopped up remains of his father Ouranos and his brother Kronos standing over them with a devilish smile on his wicked face. He saw his home in the west and his wife Clymene in her wedding dress. He saw each of his sons, Prometheus, Epimetheus, Atlas and Menoetius. He saw many more images of Percy Jackson, Nico di Angelo and Small Bob, his faithful cat. He decided that if he was to die (and he was certain that he would) he wanted his last thoughts to be of family.

Prometheus was always very peaceful. He could always find a crafty way around things and would win in every gambling game because he was the Titan of Forethought. He even gave fire to human which got him punished but it was a nice gesture anyway. Epimetheus was foolish and dim. Bob smiled. He always remembered the inventive excuses his son had come up with whenever he did anything wrong. He was after all the Father of Excuses. Bob's smile wavered when he thought of his son Menoetius. In the Battle of the Titans, Zeus had struck Menoetius down with a bolt of lightning and sent his soul to the Underworld. Iapetus and Clymene had both grieved for their lost son.

His smile fell further still when he remembered his son Atlas. He was supposed to love his sons and he tried but he found it hard to love Atlas. Unlike his brothers, Atlas was bloodthirsty and cruel. He had eventually been imprisoned by the gods but not before his wife Pleione had borne him many beautiful daughters. Calypso had been put on her lonely island because her father was Atlas. The five Hesperides were lovely. Now there were only four of them.

Bob had always loved Zoe Nightshade. She was the brightest out of all her sisters. She had been banished from the Garden of the Hesperides and she joined Artemis's Hunt. Bob thought she would be safe there but he had been saddened to learn of her death. It had saddened him even more to find that she had been killed by Atlas, her own father. He knew she now lived in the stars, something that Bob had always wanted to see. He'd also always wanted to tell his beloved granddaughter hello one last time. That was why he'd asked his friends to tell the sun and the stars hello for him.

The twelve minutes were up. Bob released the button and faced Tartarus. He held the image of Zoe in his head for as long as he could and thought of how he wanted to see her again. Tartarus turned his face towards Bob and Bob knew it was the end. He thought of how he'd chosen his own path and how his granddaughter had done just the same.

Then Bob stopped thinking anything at all.
