Twenty Years After
He was in his own little world and she was doing her best to get through to him. Steve had been like that since he had woke up yelling from the nightmare three hours before. She knew a nightmare was possible when they had seen those two boys earlier that day. It had been years since the shooting happened but she knew he had never forgotten.
The boys had seemed almost replicas of the ones years before; a blonde about sixteen and a dark haired youth about the same age. Jeannie had known the way Steve froze momentarily he was once again seeing Spence Davies and Billy Garner. He finally looked at her and she could see the haunted look standing in his eyes. She did the only thing she knew to do and that was to hold him and just be there for him.
"Sorry I got that way, Jeannie. I guess some things you never totally get over no matter how much time passes."
"You have nothing to be sorry for, Steve. You are right, there are some things that just never leave you. You went through hell during that time and seeing those boys today brought back all of that in an instant."
Steve hugged Jeannie close as she did him. She knew she was not home during the time the Davies shooting had happened but it had made news even down in Arizona. Since it had made the news she did not pretend to not know anything about it. She defended Steve to any and all that dared to be a naysayer against him. She knew he would not just shoot a kid without that kid being an armed threat to him and Mike and possibly others.
"I know that time was pretty bad for you too, Jeannie. I know I said it back then after Mike told me of the trouble you had with some of your friends at college but thanks again for sticking by me. I honestly don't know what I would have done without you and Mike. "
"I would do the same thing again without thinking twice darling. I knew there was no way you would use your gun without the other person being an armed threat. I will always stand by you no matter what. Think you can sleep now?"
Steve nodded, after turning off the lamp they laid back down together until sleep finally once again claimed them.
The next day Jeannie accompanied Steve to visit the grave of Spencer Davies. She had felt it might help Steve to be able to lay some demons to rest. Afterwards they went to visit Al Davies still running his bar The Dugout. The visit was very cordial and seemed to help Steve a bit to see once again there were still no hard feelings.
The next visit Steve was not so ready for but Jeannie had insisted having felt Steve truly needed someone to talk to besides just her. When they walked into Lenny Murchison's office once again he was wearing that same smile and greeted them warmly.
"Nice to see you again, Steve. Jeannie called and said you and I needed to talk have a seat. I promise this will not be so painful. Jeannie will you be joining us?"
"I think right now Steve will be enough for you to work with Lenny. Steve I will be back in a while to pick you up."
Jeannie hurried away as Steve sent a look her way of how could you do this to me before the door closed behind her.
"Well Steve I understand you have some feelings that have washed up once again twenty years after."
