Summary: 'He never even noticed the young man standing next to him, a young man who had a starling resemblance to someone who was dead.'
A/N: I don't know if there's a Korean War Veteran's Remembrance Wall somewhere, I'm not even American, but, for the sake of the story, we'll just assume there is one somewhere. Also thoughts are shown like ~ this ~.
He wasn't quite sure how long he'd been standing there; all he knew is that his fingers had lost feeling a while ago. As a doctor he knew this wasn't good for him, but he couldn't help it. He was drawn to this place. He was drawn to the name of the man he loved in Korea, the man he still loves.
He never even noticed the young man standing next to him, a young man who had a starling resemblance to someone who was dead. That was, until the young man spoke.
"It's cold here today."
"It's always cold out here in the winter."
He spoke without turning to see who the man was.
"Did you serve in the war sir?"
This time he did turn, and almost did a double take at the face staring back at him. He composed himself before answering.
"I did. I was a surgeon."
~ Just like your father was. ~
"My dad was a surgeon too. When he was coming back home his plane was shot down."
~ I know the story well. ~
"That must have been rough for your family."
"It would have been if I could remember it. I was just a child at the time. I never even met my dad."
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be. I don't need your sorrow, I've got enough of my own. Be sorry for yourself, for your loved ones who died."
"I will be."
~ Even though it's for the same man. ~
The younger man placed flowers below his dad's name on the wall, and began to walk away.
"I miss your dad too, you know? He was a great friend and a great surgeon. You just hope you grow up to be like Henry Braymore Blake."
He stopped, surprised this man knew who he was. He turned to question him, but a reply was already out of his mouth.
"You look just like him. That's how I knew. Your dad was a good man. For his sake, be a good man too."
He kissed the younger man on the forehead and hugged him. As he let go the younger man nodded a thanks to him, and slipped away.
~ He'll never know Henry. I always promised myself that no one would ever know. And you know I always keep my promises. ~
As he knelt in front of Henry's name he could feel the tears welling behind his eyes.
~ I miss you. ~
He ran his hands through his hair a couple of times and stood to leave.
He'd be back again tomorrow. He'd just stare at the wall and think about Korea.
He'd think about Henry.
He'd think about what they had.
