'Just Testing The Waters'

Kathryn Janeway lounged in her quarters twisting locks of her fiery auburn hair around her right index finger, musing on the last few days. A day ago in her ready room, Commander Chakotay had come to deliver a report.
(Flash Back)
'Morning Kathryn, heres the report from B'Elanna you wanted' He smiled warmly at her. 'Thankyou Chakotay.' She looked up at him and grinned. 'How'd your anniversary dinner with Annika go last night?'
Chakotay looked down amused. ' Perfect! She's really really something...She reminds me of...' He trailed off. Kathryn looked confused.
'She reminds me of you Kathryn' Chakotay said grimly. They looked at each other. Obsidian met Sapphire. They stayed that way for a least five minutes, when the door chime went off. They jumped and sprung further apart, like a couple of teenagers being caught by one of their parents.
'Come in'
The door opened to admit Commander Tuvok.
'Captain, I need to speak with...'
She didn't hear the rest, as her eyes followed Chakotay as he left the room.
(End Flashback)
Her musing were interrupted as her door chime went.
'Thats strange, Jaffen should still be in engineering.' She thought.
'Come' She ordered. Commander Chakotay walked in.
'Kathryn I need to know, I need to understand whats going on between us and if I can trust it.'
Kathryn looked down, biting her lip.
'He sure gets right to the damn point' She thought to herself.
'I don't quite know myself Chakotay'
Chakotay suddenly had an idea.
'Kathryn...Do you think...Do you think there'll be fireworks...I mean, when we kiss?'
Kathryn's head snapped up.
'I...I'm not sure. Do you really want to find out, and risk what you have with Annika?'
Chakotay looked deeply into her eyes.
'I have to.' He said softly. 'I need to know!'
Kathryn smiled weakly.
'Me too...'
They moved closer to each other. Chakotay cupped Kathryns small porcelain face in his hands and softly but passionately kissed her. Kathryn responded. The realisation hit them both at the same time. They broke apart.
'No fireworks' Kathryn said.
'No. No fireworks' Chakotay looked a little disappointed. Kathryn smiled.
'We were always better as best friends. Huh?'
Chakotay laughed and hugged her.
'Damn right!' He let her go and lightly kissed her on the forehead. They smiled at each other.
'Goodnight Kathryn, sleep well.'
'Yes, you too.' She smiled her trademark lopsided smile. When he had left her quarters, Kathryn smiled widely, and said.
'All's right in the world.'
