Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder

Sam watched silently as Dean made another private phone call.
The whole year Dean had been trapped in Purgatory, Sam had believed he was in Paradise with his very own angel. He'd even berated his selfishness when the pain of the Dean-shaped hole in his heart became too much and he'd prayed for his brother's return.
His wish was granted with a harder, less-forgiving version who'd resolved Sam's absence with a literal monster who even called him 'brother'.
He'd tried to explain, but his words turned to ashes from the guilt and shame that burned as hot as his jealousy.
