He's driving when he realises Mello planned for Matt to live and Mello to die. It doesn't work like that and Matt gives a grim smile. He eases off on the accelerator, watches them close in on him in the mirror. He laughs at the 'objects may appear much closer than they actually are' and slows down more. Does Mello really think that he's just going to let him leave: 'Fuck that!'
Then they've surrounded him, he hears the shots before he even feels them, and even then he feels the impact, the push, before the pain. It hurts, but not too much. Still he swears to God that if Heaven doesn't exist or Mello has somehow managed to get into Hell without Matt he will strangle the blond with his stupid crucifix.
