The Treasure that he cared about most
They had done it. They had reached Cibola, the city of gold. Riley looked all around, impressed that people could build a whole city out of gold.
" We've found it", Riley yelled happily to Ben. Ben flashed a smile at him. Then Riley saw Mr. and Mrs. Gates.
" Mom, we found it", Ben yelled.
Then, out of no where the team heard a loud rumbling sound and water started filling the city. Riley's head was suddenly spinning.
" Riley, get down here", yelled Ben. Riley quickly made his whey down the steps.
" Where is the exit?" yelled Mitch.
" There has to be a current", Mr. Gates said. He dropped a dollar in the water and noticed it was pulling toward a certain way.
" The current leads down!" Mr.Gates yelled.
Everyone went down, into a little tunnel. That lead to a little room with a huge closed door.
" We need to get that door open!" Ben yelled. Mitch and Ben jumped up on a table with a big lever. Ben did all he could to push the lever.
" One of us is going to stay behind", Mitch said coldly.
" I vote Mitch", Riley said.
" This isn't a democracy", Mitch snapped. At moment Mitch pulled a knife out of his pocket and put it up to Abby's throat.
" Let her go", Riley yelled.
" Now we are going to do this my way", Mitch said, pulling the knife away from Abby. " Ben and I will open the door, Mr. and Mrs. Gates will get out first, followed by Abby, Riley, and me.
" I'm not leaving without Ben!" yelled Riley. Ben just looked at Riley with sorrowful eyes.
" Go", Ben said. Abby gave Ben a hug and then Mitch helped Ben open the door.
" Dad and Mom, go!" Ben yelled. They dove under water in under the door. Ben did all he could to choke back tears.
" Next is Abby and Riley", Ben said. Abby went first, followed by Riley who looked at Ben with an expression that drove Ben to tears.
" Good-bye", Riley said, and went under the door.
" It's my turn", Mitch said coldly. " I hope you have a good life", Mitch said. And before he plunged under the door Mitch added " Your great- great granddaddy is innocent".
All Ben could do was stand, untill the water ingulfed him and made him drown.
When Riley was safe on the other side he started to cry. Everyone started to cry, exept Mitch.
" He just saved your life", Mitch said.
" But he was my best friend", Riley said sadly.
" Friends come and go", Mitch said coldly.
Riley would have punched him but he held back.
" At least Ben found the treasure", Riley said, still crying.
" No, he lost it", Mrs. Gates said.
" What do you mean?" Riley asked.
" The treasure that he lost was you", she said. And at that moment, Riley relized what a great freind Ben was, and what an even greater treasure hunter he was.
