I'm thinking of calling this a "drabble shot" since it's more than 100 words but shorter than most of the one shots I've written to date…
Mia's POV:
Some kids were playing soccer near the sewer entrance…Looks like I'm taking the long way to the factory. I turned & started heading into town, thinking about how my day had been so far.
I'm pretty sure I failed today's math test, but that wasn't anything new…I was terrible at math. I mean, math is supposed to be all about numbers. Why do letters have to get thrown in with it? Don't even get me started on negative numbers…Why should we care about numbers that don't really exist?
Ugh, I'll also have to get through a chapter of my history text book over the weekend…There has to be a better way to learn history then from a stupid book that was so boring, it literally took a couple hours to finish a chapter…
Truth be told, school's starting to really drag me down. It feels like it's this endless cycle of class, home work, test, & repeat. There were some days where it felt endless, like there was nothing else to the world except school. There has to be more out there, right?
I glanced up & saw that I had arrived at the factory. I smiled & hurried across the bridge.
There was more to life than just school work…
"Hey, Mia." George said when the elevator stopped at the lab.
"Sorry, there were some kids playing soccer by the sewer entrance. I had to cut through town to get here…" I said, adding my backpack to the pile near the elevator.
"Why didn't you just go through the Hermitage?"
"…Guess I wasn't thinking. Sorry…" I said, mentally kicking myself.
"It's all right." George said, turning back to the key board. "Ready to go?"
"You have no idea…"
