Yaxley's Sorting

Corban Yaxley looked around the large room. He knew it was called the Great Hall, and it sure was great. He had never seen anything so amazing.

He looked up at the ceiling, his mouth wide open in his awe.

Today was a big day for him. Probably one of the biggest days of his schooling.

He turned his attention to a lone stool where a funny looking hat sat. And when the hat opened his mouth to sing, Corban listened to the song.

Today, he would be sorted into a house. And he'd spend seven years in that house with the same people. It would be important where he went because that would determine the connections he'd make.

He thought about where he'd want to go. Slytherin seemed like an obvious choice. Much of his family came from the snake pit. But that might have been why Slytherin wasn't a good place for him. He wouldn't stand out as spectacular. He wouldn't be able to do anything to truly help the Pure-bloods like his father wanted him to do.

He looked at the house in blue. Ravenclaw wasn't a bad house either. He also had family from the eagle house, and being known for intelligence wasn't anything to be ashamed of. Still, Ravenclaws were nosy, and if went out of bounds for some work that needed to be done in secret, he was more likely to be discovered.

He didn't even look at the maroon house. There was no way he'd ever choose to be a brash and annoying Gryffindor.

Instead, he gazed at the house table that was decked out in yellow. Hufflepuff. He tilted his head and really thought about it.

The badger house wasn't an obvious choice like Ravenclaw and Slytherin, but that didn't mean it couldn't' work. Hufflepuffs were hard-working. They were loyal.

Corban knew he was hard-working. He had spent hours in lessons as he grew up, learning everything he needed to in order to one day become the head of the Yaxley house.

Loyalty didn't necessarily mean towards a person. It could mean towards a cause, and Corban was extremely loyal to a cause he had known about since he was a little boy.

Hufflepuffs weren't nosy. They tended to mind their own business, so Corban could work undisturbed. He might even be able to convert some Hufflepuffs to think the way he did, add more people to the cause.

Corban put on a wide smile. Yes, Hufflepuff was just where he needed to be for his seven years at Hogwarts. As he got closer and closer to his future as more and more students were sorted, he thought about what he needed to do to make sure he went into Hufflepuff.

He'd tell the hat where he wanted to go. He'd prove to the hat that he had qualities that made him a Hufflepuff even they could be considered Slytherin qualities as well.

He could do it. He would do it. Hufflepuff was where he'd do the most good.
