Dr Sally Creek sat down to ease off her shoes and glanced over at her eleven-year-old son, curled half-off the sofa, engrossed in a battered old book. Encyclopaedia of the Unexplained, proclaimed the cover.

"No control," he answered absently, his eyes still skipping over the words. "Besides," he added in the same distracted tone, "it's not really an experiment. More of an anecdote."

She laughed and squeezed him tight for a second, before getting to her feet and heading off to change out of her work clothes, shooting one proud smile back at her intelligent, well-raised offspring.
