Hermione stepped onto the open roof of the astronomy tower to see a familiar black-haired green-eyed boy looking at the stars. One constellation, really. One star.
Sirius, the dog.
"Hey Harry." She said softly as she moved to sit beside him. "The map said you were here."
"I was just thinking about how much fun I'll have this summer, spending time with Sirius and Remus. Does Ron know you're up here with me? We wouldn't want him getting possessive and jealous because he thought we got together behind his back."
If Harry had said this a few months ago, Hermione would have been greatly concerned, as she had been when it first started, but she had learned to deal, just like the rest of them. Because, like so many others, Sirius, Ron, and Remus were all dead.
"I'm sure he does."
"That's good. I think he always knows where you are."
Hermione was scared because she wasn't sure if Harry's comments were the product of his 'condition', as they called it, or if they were Harry. Some of them seemed sensible, like how he thought Ron was watching her; but then he'd say something so completely off, usually having to do with Voldemort, whose name he seemed to no longer remember, but always reacted to.
Voldemort…That last battle had cost him so much. It had been hours before he was stable, and then days before he could take visitors. He'd seemed normal at first, wanted to go home, but then he'd started to forget. Deaths, events, and battles…he'd forget.
They'd told her his brain was deteriorating, they gave him two months.
That was half a year ago.
"I'm dying 'Mione."
The comment was so sudden and so lucid, that she wasn't sure she hadn't imagined it.
"I'm dying. I've been holding off the decay for so long, but it's broken through. I'll be gone by summer."
"Harry no, don't-"
"Hush. I wanted to tell you something before I go, because I'll regret it if I don't, and I don't think I can take another regret."
"What is it?"
"I love you 'Mione. I wanted to ask you if you would, for a short time, do me the honor of becoming my wife." He pulled a ring out of his pocket and slipped it gently onto her finger.
"Harry it's beautiful!"
"Is that a yes then?"
Harry Potter fell into a coma just before NEWTs that year, and finally died a few weeks later.
Hermione never did get around to taking hers.
It was also around this time that Hermione Granger fell out of the records, seemingly out of existence.
One Mrs. Harry Potter became famous for upholding her husband's beliefs until her dying day, after her son became Minister of Magic, promising to uphold the truths his father had believed in strongly enough to give his life for.
She never did remarry.
