Part 1

Chapter 1

His shoes were black. They were polished to a high shine. They were perfect. Just like the man that wore them.

And both the shoes and the man were walking away from her.

"Hey, Sam, wanna go grab something to eat?"

Samantha Spade looked up into Danny Taylor's smiling face. She gave him a quick smile and an equally quick response.

"Sure, just let me sign this real fast."

Samantha signed her report, grabbed her purse and headed towards the elevator with Danny.

During the elevator ride down, a soft sigh escaped Samantha and she could immediately feel Danny's eyes on her. Not like the gazes of most men, Danny's looked her over with concern, searching her for the signs of pain that she masked everyday, for the last two years.

He never brought it up. The moment Jack told the team that Martin had transferred back to Seattle he understood.

When they had reached the parking lot, the pair made their way to his car.

Once they were on the street driving to a near café, she looked at him and lost herself in thought.

Danny was her best friend, and really, the only man who had never hurt her. There was a while when people in the office had believed that she and him were involved. Whenever someone asked she would smile softly and walk away, knowing that her standard response, "No, Danny and I are just close friends. I really don't see him that way, and I know the feeling's mutual," did nothing to deter the co-workers and their rumors.

They had just ordered and were sitting, waiting for their order in the outdoor terrace of the café.

It was a sunny day and she hated sunny days.

After the food came, they managed to keep up a fairly interesting dialogue.

As usual she would ask him about any girls he was seeing, and sometimes he would give details and describe the new special someone in his life, but he never asked her the same question. He knew better.
