From The Eye Of The World

Prologue

Darkness. It surrounded him, blinding him. No amount of the One Power repelled it. The boiling rage of saidin was useless against it. Not even his submission to the Light saved him from the darkness.

Fear. It filled him, consumed him. The one companion that had been with him since the start of his journey. It burned his insides, filling him with shame. The emotion that not even they could drive away.

Madness. It possessed him, controlled him. Sometimes he dreamed, dreamed of sanity. To be able not to fear for their safety every time he was around them. To not hear the voice that whispered in the back of his mind.

Peace. He longed for it. His bones ached for it. But as ever, it was one of many things that were forever beyond his reach. The thought almost made him chuckle; he had more power than any other being on earth, but in his eyes, the lowliest farmer was richer than he.

Dragon. His title, his identity. They were curled around his forearms, were unfurled on banners across the face of the world. It was a name that instilled the very fear that gripped him in the hearts of many, and hope in a good many others. The whispers in the back of his mind grew louder.

Hatred.

For Shai'tan; the Dark One who it was his destiny to defeat. The creator of pain and anger in the world. Burning, freezing. Death incarnate.

For the Wheel of Time; that thing of unimaginable power that wove the very fabric of reality. Shaping souls into its Pattern, unfeeling. Uncaring.

And for Lews Therin Telamon; the voice in the back of his mind, that murmured in his ear, from whom he could hide nothing. That one they called the Kinslayer. The one who made the people fear the name Dragon.

And as he lay alone in the darkness, Rand screamed.
