The cold bit into him but he did not feel it. He smiled down at the gravestones before him, two in particular. He knelt down in the snow not caring that it made him feel colder than before. He carefully placed three wire skeletons of roses on a grave inscribed with Kuroba Kaito and on the one engraved with Edogawa Conan he placed one white rose. His lips twisted into a smirk and then he sat between the two graves. "Hi" he said to the tombstones, "You would be so surprised, Kaitou Kid, of my current… occupation." He laughed the laugh of a man broken by the word and thrown to the wolves. "I only found out that we where after the same thing once you where dead." He glanced around as though he was expecting to be attacked and whispered, "I found Pandora, took down the Black Organization, returned as Shinichi, and became Kaitou Kid. Not in that order but you get the idea." He waved his hand as though dismissing the subject.
He gave an affronted look to the nearest tombstone then sighed and said, "Sorry, Kaito-san, I know you're rolling in your grave at the fact that your tantei-kun became your successor. But I wasn't sure who else could become it without several noticeable differences appearing. Thankfully I look enough like you and we have matching blood types so no one noticed, it might have helped that Kaitou KID only waited two months before sending out another notice." Shinichi sighed.
"I actually came here to tell you that Aoko is getting married." Shinichi smiled a broken smile. "After you died, Aoko and Hakuba became close to survive your death, and Hakuba actually revealed his feelings for Aoko. They went through morning together and then became boyfriend and girlfriend. Just recently Heiji proposed to Kazuha and then Hakuba decided now was the time and proposed to Aoko who said yes." Shinichi's smile became bittersweet, "I don't think I'll be able to make the wedding, but they don't know that yet. Ran actually married Araide a couple months after I returned." He looked fondly at the tombstone.
"At first she thought we could be together then I told her that in my time as Conan I had come to love her as a sister, she was surprisingly okay with this." Shinichi took a breath, "The Ran demanded to know who I had fallen in love with, I told her Kuroba Kaito. She laughed saying she was glad that I had found another girl to be happy with." Shinichi got a thoughtful look on his face, "I don't think I ever corrected her assumption that you were a girl, you dressed like on often enough." Shinichi could imagine the thief laughed and wondered how life would have been if Snake had not killed the Kaitou that night.
"Genta and Ayumi are steady dating and Haibara and Mitsuhiko are dating with everyone planning their wedding behind their back. That witch that was obsessed with you found a husband and had a child, Akako named him Kaito. I don't think the husband knows who you where or where Akako got the name. You won the Division 1 betting pool because you correctly guessed the time and place of Takagi's proposal to Sato and Shiratori's proposal to Sumiko. They are actually having a joint wedding." Shinichi spent the rest of the night catching the dead thief up on what he had missed in the three years he had been dead. The detective turned thief did not notice the time, spending all the time with his best friend.
The next day the newspapers announced "Detective Kudo Shinichi Found Frozen in Beiki Cemetery." The newspapers devoted at least one whole page to this story, some speculation, some fact, and a couple interviews with those who knew him. No one, though, could explain the three roses made of ice on Kuroba Kaito's grave.
