"N-no, Rachel. Rach..el"
A pained sleepy voice murmured. The distressed young woman with spontaneous blue hair twists and turns a bit as a tear ran down her pale cheek. "Chloe!" Max placed her gentle hand on her friend's shoulder and shook it softly.
"Mmh, Max?"
Chloe looked at her friend with a upset look on her face. "God Chloe, you're sweating up a storm. Are you okay?" Giving a slight smile on her face she tried to selflessly make her friend feel better about her feeling upset. "Heh, too soon"
Max not breaking her concerned look; looked down in sadness. "Geez Max, you look like your dog died or something. I'm fine I just been having those nightmares again." Seeing her friend feeling sorry for her offended her slightly, it wasn't her fault that Rachel died but at the same time she blamed herself partly. There was nothing she could've done. "Look, Max. There's nothing you could've done about Rachel. It was her fate to die, sounds pretty shitty I know but don't beat yourself up about it, okay?" She frowned as Max spoke in disagreement.
"Since that day, you been crying in your sleep every night and… saying her name. I feel like I could do something to get her back in your life… Chloe, I'm so glad I chose you believe me but I can't stand seeing you this way. I know I can go back in time, probably so far that Rachel would still be alive." Chloe grabbing Max by her shoulders forced her attention as their eyes met. "No, I won't allow that. Everything we done, the people that was sacrificed. Nathan and that fucker Mr. Jefferson. Everything will be undone, we did this. Are you willing to screw up the timeline again? We don't even know if you still have your powers."
Max looked at her hands examining it thoroughly in thought. [Chloe could be right; the storm has passed after all. Could my powers have passed as well, I promised myself I wouldn't ever use my ability again but I can't stand seeing my Chloe like this. What should I do?] Looking back at the rosy cheeked female she replied to her.
"Chloe…"
"Now stop feeling bad for me, I'll be okay. I'll get over it, I don't know when or how but I will. I promise Max." Looking at the road ahead she started her rusty vehicle that was parked at the side of the roadway on the forest side.
"Let's get some miles from here, the closer I am to Arcadia Bay the worse I feel." Max looking at her smiled for her even though she was quite sad herself.
"Yeah" Chloe stepping on the gas sped off the grass, a rabbit hopping onto the road looking at the truck drive away. Max looking back in the passenger seat glances at the rabbit and then at the road behind them thinking about the destruction she left. Looking forward again she laid her head down getting comfortable as she drifted asleep. Seconds turned to minutes, which turned to hours, about 4 to be exact.
"Shit…Fuck, come on!"
Chloe slammed on the dashboard waking Max up. "Urhh, what is it?"
"I ran out of gas! I totally forgot that I haven't refilled this thing in ages." Max looked around outside from window view checking for signs of anybody. Chloe completely hopeless placed her face in her hands in dismay.
In the distance passed the trees Max noticed some smoke, a chimney? [I should get out the car and look around to see if there's anybody that could help out] "Chloe, I'm going to go look for help. I see some smoke over there, it could be a house."
Chloe hoarding a mixture of emotions and stress replied. "Sure Max, go knock yourself out"
Max feeling bad for her looked at her with a sympathetic look as she turned away to exit the truck. "Be safe Chloe" Stepping out of vehicle she closed the door behind her as she got hit by a breeze, hugging her elbows she walked in the direction of the smoke hoping that there would be something out there that would get them moving. As she walked through the grass she couldn't help but think that how she and Chloe used to have pretend adventures and now it's actually like that, for real this time. Here they are on a road trip, peering off passed the trees she sees a little cabin as her face lit up.
"Thank God" She rushed over, her feet rustling through the grass and dirt. Approaching the door she went to knock, but before she does she sees this note. (NO ONES HOME, We're off on a hunting expedition, Deer's are plentiful this season so we couldn't pass up the opportunity. If you need us we'll be back sometime tonight. From Dave, and his family) [Looks like nobody's home, but I should make sure] Raising her hand up she knocked on the door but to no avail, there was nobody there, reaching for the door knob she turned it but it was locked.
"Damn it"
She looked over to the window. "I'll feel bad for doing this but we can't stay outside the night and we need food, and gas." Settling aside her morals she grabbed the bottom part of the window and lifted it up all the way. [Here goes nothing] She climbed into the house and looked around.
"I almost forgot what this looked like"
She looked out the fireplace and the pictures mounted on the walls, this house was wall wooden and well insulated. Walking up to a picture on the dresser she picked it up seeing a man with a beard, his wife and a dog. Frowning she thought about Joyce and David. "I can't believe they're really dead. I should fix this, no I have to. They didn't deserve this, David saved me and Joyce has done so much for Chloe." Staring deeply into the photo she placed it down and walked into the Kitchen as she curiously opens up the fridge, in there was a water bottle and some dairy, beer and cold goods.
"I'm so thirsty" Grabbing the water bottle she closed the fridge and started drinking; gulping down so much at a time the water soaked her shirt. "Ahh! I should get another one for Chloe."
Opening the fridge once more she looked at the water bottle, a carton of milk and a can of beer.
"I want to give Chloe water but I know she would prefer a beer. Decisions, decisions"
Taking the water she closed the door as she walked out the kitchen. [Chloe needs to be hydrated, not tipsy] Exploring the house she runs into a storage closet, examining it she places her hand on the door knob. "Please be something useful" Turning it she pulled the door open as she sees a large container of gasoline.
"Jackpot!"
She grabs it and closes the door. [I should return to Chloe] Making her way to the entrance she suddenly hears a rattling sound at the door. "Shit" She hides behind the corner of the wall as a voice called out. "Max! Are you in there?" … "Chloe?" She walks out of hiding as goes towards the door, going to unlock the door, the door suddenly opens as Chloe gets frightened by the sight of Max right there. "Shit Max, you scared me. It turns out my lock picking skills actually works… thanks Frank." She said sadly, mourning, her head peering down only to notice her discovery. "No fucking way, you actually got Gasoline?! Sweet, you really are Super Max" She said feeling a bit better.
"I got you some water too, you can't drive when you're dehydrated." She accepted the offer and took the water. "Good thinking Max, I needed that. Talking about water I could really use a shower, it's been days, you don't mind right? I know how bad you want to just get out of here already."
Shaking her head gently max gave her response. "I don't mind Chloe"
Chloe walking passed her looked around the house and at the fire place. "Faanccyyyy, but so not my taste. I kinda miss the old Junkyard, to think about it the whole Arcadia Bay is a junkyard now. It still feels so surreal"
Max stepping back inside closed the door behind her. "I know, but everything will be better soon. I promise" The punk girl kept surveying the house as she spots the bathroom. "Bingo! I'll be about 15; you should pour the gas into the truck and try to get it to start. I'll be back." Max nodded as she they went separate ways, Chloe to the bathroom and Max to the Truck.
(The sound of running water rushed out of the shower head)
"I can't wait to finally start a new life, no more Arcadia Bay. No more drama, just me and Max" The smoke filled the bathroom as she scrubbed the soap out of her soft hair massaging it and running her nails through it.
Max on the other hand finally reached the vehicle. "Please don't mess up, clumsy" She opened up the cap on the truck and lifted up the gasoline container, opening the lid she poured the gasoline in the tank, slowly but surely until the bottle was empty.
"Now for the moment of truth, drum roll please"
Closing the cap and dropping the bottle she made her way into the driver's seat and grabbed the screw driver. "Let's start this bad boy" Sticking the tool into the ignition she twisted it a few times as the engine started. Exhaust coming from the pipe, the smell of success. "Super Max strikes again" Pleased with herself she cuts the engine as she turns her sights to a paper edge sticking out of the front interior section of the car, under the dashboard. Taking it by the edge she pulls it out as she stared at it, it was a picture of her when she was in Seattle. Her mom must've sent Chloe this; this picture was dated March 20th 2013 about a month before Rachel Amber went missing!
"With this… I can fix everything… I could bring Rachel Amber back! If I can somehow go back in time and warn Chloe about The Dark Room, I can bring Jefferson and Nathan to Justice before she's killed. Plus everybody will still be alive… including Chloe." Her face lit up as she looked over towards the smoke.
"Chloe… please don't hate me for this."
Looking back at the photo she focused hard as she started to hear the voices in the background. [Yes! My powers… Just a bit more] focusing harder it all went white as she went through time, her sight suddenly coming back… she was in Seattle. "Yes! It worked" She looked around in her room as her mom stood in front of her with the camera. "Max, what worked?" Her mom stated as she gave her daughter a smile. "Nothing mom" [Mom… I missed you so much] "Alright dear, well I'll be heading downstairs. Me and your dad have to go out and do some errands. We'll be back soon, okay?"
"Okay mom" She smiled warmly as her mom left the room.
"Chloe, hold on tight. You too Rachel, I'm finally going to make things right." Taking her phone she dialed Chloe's number as she placed it to her ear.
The phone continues to ring…
"C'mon Chloe, pick up…" Answering the phone was a familiar voice, the voice of Chloe. "Oh my god! Max! It's been forever! How's things in Seattle? I can't believe this right now."
(Chloe's perspective)
"That's great, I thought you forgot about me Max, I really missed you." The sun glared through the window of the little house in the junkyard as Chloe laid back in her bed, outside the house was Rachel! Sitting outside on a tire watching the birds fly by, a soft smile forming on her face as she looks down at the solid Doe in the distance.
[I did it…I saved Rachel Amber and Chloe, I finally saved everyone…]
