Very fun to write! I like the turtle, too...A very neat turtle. This is friendship, by the way. I take pride in clearly marking my stories. This was recently edited. Please review, thank you!
"I never knew that you liked turtles." Lying in the grass on his stomach, Timothy Upham was propped up on his elbows. He smiled faintly, watching the turtle that crawled about between he and Wade while it carried an expression that entitled the creature to endless affection from both. Wade looked down, his eyes shadowed by dark eyelashes, and shrugged, the narrow shoulders rising in a gradual incline on both sides.
"I always have, they're peaceful little creatures. Never meaning any harm... I think if more people would be like turtles this world would be a bit more peaceful." Wade chuckled and petted the turtle's head with one finger. It allowed him to do this, but kept moving at the same time. "Where did you find him?" He looked at Upham with interest, taking the other by surprise.
"Oh—I found him near the little creek that we crossed. He was drinking." Upham liked Wade. He would listen to what he said and wasn't always throwing insults his way. It was rare that they got moments alone like this, to just talk, but he liked them. It was relaxing.
"Oh. He was probably about to go look for a mate." Wade smiled in his usual light way of doing so, his mouth becoming a small line that tilted upwards at both ends.
"You think so, Wade?" Upham reached for the turtle as it started to crawl out of his sight, and gently set it back down, petting its shell before he looked up at his friend.
"Mm-hm. They go looking for other turtles around this time of year, so that they lay their eggs and then they can hatch when it's warm." There was a feeling of quiet contentment between them as they spoke.
Upham's stomach growled and he looked down sheepishly, even though Wade didn't seem to mind at all. He'd just had something to eat…He often found himself hungry now, though, because of the considerable amount of physical effort that he wasn't used to. He took a bit of a biscuit out of his breast pocket and looked up at Wade.
"Do you want any of this, Wade? I don't mind sharing if you're hungry." He smiled, breaking it in half. Upham held out the other half. Wade voiced his thanks as he took it, breaking off a small bit and putting it in his mouth.
"We should probably set the turtle free soon." He said after he finished swallowing. "Maybe he already has a mate. He could be missing her." Wade smiled thoughtfully, petting the turtle's shell again and holding a bit of biscuit up to its mouth.
"He would be a lucky turtle, then." Upham watched the turtle and smiled back at Wade. He didn't really have a lot of luck with women, but it didn't bother him very much. He liked to take life with a quiet happiness and just accepted what came his way.
"He would be." Wade nodded in agreement, getting up from where he had laid on the grass. Upham yawned, getting up as well, and picked up his turtle. The creature withdrew into its shell with a small airy sound. "We should put him back close to the creek. Let's put him on the other side. I think he wanted to cross."
"You think so, Wade?"
"Probably."
