Warning! This fic contains a huge spoiler for Kingdom Hearts II, so please do not read it if you haven't completed the game!

Author's Note: Hooray for my second completed fanfic! This is just a very short piece. I'd originally intended it to be longer, but I couldn't satisfy myself beyond the last line. I'm pleased with it, though. Enjoy!

Disclaimer: If it belonged to me, I would be getting paid for this, now wouldn't I?

(Also, the dialogue in the beginning of this is taken straight out of the game right up until Roxas starts yelling. So, the dialogue? Not mine either.)

Living Dream

"You're… fading away."

"Well, that's what happens when you put your whole being into an attack- know what I mean? Not that Nobodies actually have beings, right? Anyway, I digress." Axel continued, but, try as he might, Roxas couldn't hear what he said. Not again… I can't lose him again. Why is this happening? Words fell from his own lips, a string of meaningless sentences until one broke through the fog surrounding him.

"Axel, what were you trying to do?" Roxas asked, falling to his knees beside his fading friend.

"I wanted to see you. You… were the only one I liked. You made me feel… like I had a heart." Tears streamed down his cheeks as Roxas clung to Axel's hand until his fingers closed on air. Once again, Axel was gone.

"No!" Roxas screamed as the world around him dimmed to black. "No!" he shouted again. "This isn't fair," he murmured, voice breaking.

These days, Roxas only existed whilst Sora slept. He could live in his other's memories; otherwise he was surrounded by darkness. His existence was a sort of living dream. Unfortunately, one particular dream was haunting him. Sora had seen Axel die, and now Roxas was forced to relive the moment over and over again. It was quickly becoming too painful to bear.

All of his memories of the Organization had returned, including those of Axel. The two had been inseparable, clinging to each other's company within the dark world of the Nobodies. Surrounded by pain and suffering, they'd found happiness in one another.

Roxas sighed, his clenched fists going limp as they fell to the floor. His happiness was gone.

"I thought I was supposed to be whole now, Naminé. Then… why do I feel so empty?"
