"Hey! Stop the elevator!" Irvine yelled, running down the hallways of Balamb Garden with his trench coat trailing behind him. He was late. Again.
Slowly, a hand reached out and stopped the closing doors. Irvine ran in doubled over, panting for breath. "Hey thanks...Selphie?" Shit! Of all the people in all the Gardens in all the world, she stops the elevator for me? Irvine thought.
Selphie too was shocked. "Hey Irvine," she said. Now that's a really great answer. He doesn't want to talk to you, so why do you make conversation? Especially after what had happened... "How are you?" Here I go again, making conversation when I really want to run away.
She's talking to me? That's new. "I've been good." Idiot, he cursed himself You have not been good! You've been terrible and you know it! "And you?" Wait, why do I care? It's not your fault about...what happened. But she's already asked so you might as well be polite.
"I've been," Selphie paused, Sad? Missing you? Wondering why we broke up? She eventually decided on "good." Liar! she thought to herself. "I heard about your new girlfriend; she sounds really nice." I hate her.
"Oh yeah, we're perfect together," Irvine said. But she hates it when I cuss, can't stand when I smile at other girls, and doesn't like my hat. "Congratulations on your engagement." For some reason, Irvine just couldn't put much feeling into that sentence.
"Thanks," Selphie responded, forcing a smile on her face. "He's great, really..." She pondered a few adjectives: annoying? stuck up? antisocial? "Great," she finished lamely.
An awkward silence hung over them for a few moments. The elevator stopped and the doors opened.
"Yeah well, this is my floor," Irvine whispered. For some reason his voice just wouldn't go louder. Both of them knew he was lying.
"It was great talking with you!" Selphie replied. More lies.
Irvine stepped out and the elevator doors slowly closed, separating them in more ways than one.
