I wipe the tears from my face as I mumble to myself. "There's no way...no way I passed…" My orange hair stands out amongst the other students, new students turn my way as I quickly cross the courtyard. While wiping my eyes again, I feel myself bump into someone. "O-Oh, I'm so sorry!" I jump back surprised and bow, then I froze mid-bow. Mom had always been so Japan-centric that even I developed the habits she had, even though I don't remember much of her...
"No, I'm sorry! It's my fault, I wasn't paying attention." He grins goofily and scratches the back of his head. "You're psychology major I guess?" The man questions, pointing at the textbook in my hand.
"I've already gotten my psychology degree, I needed reading material for after I finished the bar exam." I cast my eyes downward "I'm sure I failed though." My voice decreases in enthusiasm as I say those last few words.
"I'm sure that's not the case. What are the laws of evidence?" He challenges me. He challenges me? The great Athena Cykes will not lose a challenge!
"Oh! That's easy. No evidence shall be shown without the approval of the Police Department, and unregistered evidence presented must be relevant to the case in trial! Everyone knows that." I reply with abundant energy.
The man continues to challenge me, I answer the questions correctly and the man chuckled. "Would you like to have dinner?" He asked calmly.
"What?! I-I'm sorry, no, I can't have relationships, especially not now, I'm only 17!" I stutter out. I know I looked older than I was, so this wasn't the first time I had been asked out. But I can't let myself become distracted, no matter what.
"Oh no, I have a daughter at home, you remind me of her enthusiasm. I am - was - a lawyer, I haven't discussed law in a while so this was fun. The legal world will be safe with you, I'm sure of it, but I want to talk to you about a position at my Agency, the Wright Anything Agency."
"The...Right Anything Agency?" I repeat slowly.
"Sounds fishy!" Widget blurted out as my face grew red in embarrassment.
"It wasn't my idea, trust me. But we are a law agency." The blue-clad lawyer chuckled.
"Okay, there's a nice cafe around the corner on campus! Could we talk there at 5:30pm?" I said happily. Sulking about possibly failing my bar exam might just have led me to a new opportunity to save him. Plus this gives me time to Google this man's name...if I knew it! "Oh, I'm sorry, I don't think I caught your name?"
"My name is Phoenix Wright, our offices are in Los Angeles, Japalifornia."
"Okay, thank you! I'm Athena Cykes, I'll see you later then!" I shoot a wide smile and flash a peace sign with my gloved hand. I immediately noticed the look of confusion. "I'll explain the glove later, see you!" and I took off.
