Strange Love
Munkustrap made his way slowly through the junkyard. He was searching for a certain cat, but
not finding that cat. He truly needed to talk to this cat. He had to admit something very important to
this cat. Suddenly he saw her.
"Demeter!"
The golden queen turned and saw her gray tabby lover. "Hey Munkus!" she called with a grin.
"Demeter, I need to talk to you," Munkustrap said slowly.
"What about?" Demeter asked nervously. She hoped he was going to tell her he wanted kittens.
"Um... I don't exactly.... um...." He mumbled something inaudable.
Demeter frowned at him. "What did you say?"
"I don't love you any more," he mumbled.
Demeter's face held a hurt expression. "But... Why?" she whispered in confusion.
"I just don't," he murmured. "I just don't feel anything between us anymore. There's nothing..."
"For you, maybe!" Demeter snapped, suddenly angry at her former mate. "I still feel plenty between
us!"
"But I don't. I'm sorry, Dem. I still care for you, just not as a mate."
"Fine," Demeter said tightly. "I guess this is good bye, then."
"I'm sorry, Dem," Munkustrap whispered. "I really am, but I don't love you."
"You don't have to keep telling me!" Demeter cried. She ran off across the junkyard, leaving
Munkustrap to stare miserably at the ground.
A large calico cat came up to Munkustrap. "Did you tell her?" the cat asked softly.
"Yeah," Munkustrap murmured. "I told her."
"How'd she react?"
"Not too great. I think she hates me now."
"I'm sure she'll get over it," the cat said comfortingly. A calico paw fell across Munkustraps shoulder
and pulled him close. "It'll be okay. It's better. Trust me. It's not good for you to stay with her if you
don't love her any more."
"I know," Munkustrap said softly. "But I just feel so bad."
"She'll understand some day."
"I hope so. I just don't want her to hate me forever. It's just that I love you, not her."
"I don't want it to be my fault that she hates you," the calico said. "If she does hate you forever,
maybe I shouldn't be with you."
"No! Don't leave me!" Munkustrap begged. "Please don't leave me just because of Demeter! I love
you.... I need you." Munkustrap's face held helplessness. "Don't go," he whispered.
The calico held Munkustrap close. "Don't worry," the cat murmured. "I won't go." The calico gently
stroked Munkustrap's ears. "I love you, too."
"Don't ever leave me," Munkustrap told the calico. "Ever."
"Don't worry, Munkustrap. I won't," Mungojerrie said as he held Munkustrap close.
