KonanxPein

I told him not to do it. Why didn't he listen? Did he think he was invincible or something? Well, no matter how strong he was, Pein was still human. And humans are incredibly... fragile creatures. That mission he was going to go on was suicide. Why couldn't he have given it to another Akatsuki member? He was the leader, wasn't he? The most important person in the entire organization. Why did it have to be him?

I said I'd go in his place. He told me it was too dangerous, and I said that was exactly my point. Then he looked me in the eyes, blinked after a moment, and turned his back on me. He wouldn't change his mind. Why wouldn't he change his mind?

The day he left, Pein told me he'd bring back something extra for me. Something special. I didn't hear that part. The only part I heard was the part when he said my name. Konan. Konan. We said our good-byes, and I didn't cry once. After all, I was the acting leader of the Akatsuki while Pein was away. The head of a band of S-ranked criminals can't afford to show weaknesses, unfortunately. Why did he have to leave?

In the time he was gone, I kept the organization running as usual, handing out missions and reading reports. But no matter how busy I kept myself I couldn't stop thinking, wondering, worrying about Pein. Why aren't you back yet? Are you dead? Or wounded, stranded all alone in a forest where no one will ever find you? What's happening to you right now?

Days passed, then weeks, and eventually, after an excruciatingly long period of time I found a month had crawled by since Pein had departed. And just when I had given up all hope of ever seeing him again, I saw him. I couldn't make out his face, because it was hidden in shadows. But I definitely noticed his hair. His flaming red hair. At first I thought it was Sasori, coming in from the training grounds. It was pretty late. Why wasn't he asleep now?

But then the figure hesitated, and he glanced up at the window where I was sitting, and his eyes met mine, and... he smiled. A smile just for me. My heart leaped into my throat, and I flew out of my chair to lean out the window. He came back. Pein came home! He held out his arms for me and I jumped down into them from the second story, and he held me and wouldn't let me go. I asked him once more why he had to leave. He told me there was no way he wouldn't have come back. Pein had promised himself that when he returned, and only then, he would ask me something he had wanted to ask for a long time. I asked what that was. So he finally let me go, reached into his pocket, and pulled out a small box. And - oh my god - Pein got down on one knee and asked,

"Konan, will you marry me?"
