I admit, I have a bit of an obsession. My name is Lilly Anderson, and I don't lose. Ever. I'm a shadow hunter. I've been one my whole life, so have my seven siblings. Generations of my family have been shadow hunters, and my parents carried on the tradition. My parents died while hunting, and no one wanted us, so we were on our own. It had been like this for a while, ever since my oldest brother mason was twelve. As of this year, he was nineteen. In order from youngest to oldest it went Bella, Jackie, Bri, Jason, Jack, me, Brady and mason. Bella is six, Jackie is seven, Bri is nine, Andy is twelve, Jack and I are twins, we are fifteen, Brady is seventeen and Mason is nineteen.
We moved a lot, to avoided getting too attached to anyone. Getting attached meant a chance of getting hurt. My family didn't really take pain well. This month, we were in New York. We weren't like other shadow hunters; we didn't follow their rules. They had all their rules and regulations to follow. I guess you could call us free-lance shadow hunters . It was simple for us, they were demons, you killed them. Kill first, ask questions later. The gap was getting bigger. While they were growing in numbers, we were shrinking rapidly. They want to come, good, we'll take them on. All we thought when we saw demons was kill them. Why not. I mean they slaughtered our parents like animals, didn't they? It was hard to see past the anger and pain, to get over what happened to our parents. We all stuck together, no one ever needed us then, and we don't need them now. All that we ever had was each other.
Only once had I ever seen another shadow hunter that wasn't in my family. I don't remember their name, but they had been friends with my mom. I remember one time hearing Jackie being named after an old friend my mom had lost contact with. The woman had auburn hair and green eyes. I was young then, probably around twelve. I remembered it being serious, looking at their stances. The way my mom stood, tensed, and the way her forehead creased, like the way it would when we would get into fights. I remembered how distinctively the woman with the auburn hair stood out. How she looked different than the other people we knew. They were both pale, like they had seen a ghost.
The words were blurred, but I remembered what they were talking about. I remembered because the way they talked was odd, something I didn't really understand then. The other woman kept repeating on phrase though. "He's coming, he's coming for us."
I had always wondered what the other shadow hunter meant, but I never found out. Then again, I wondered a lot of things. Like why us? What did we do to deserve this? Why my parents? will the war ever end? Will I ever get the chance to fall in love? Have kids? Grow old? Would I ever get my happily ever after? So many things I wondered, and so many answers I'll never get.
