A fanfiction revolving around Dean's love for his little brother, take it as you wish.

The last of the cereal

Dean always gave Sam the last of the cereal.

He did it without Sam asking after that first time; because he knew that Sam would smile when he put the bowl in front of him. Those cherubic eyes would light with glee and a hand would outstretch to offer him the toy at the bottom of the box. Dean would always take the cheap plastic creation, smiling and rubbing his brother's hair.

The tradition carried on into other matters, as well.

Dean would do anything for his precious baby brother. Would give anything.

When Dean was fifteen and Sam was 11, the elder took Sam to get a library card. It was a simple thing; blue plastic with a white back and Dean's name signed sloppily on the back. Sam grinned and tackled his brother, wrapping small arms around the larger form. Dean ruffled the brunette's hair and then walked out the door with their dad for a hunt. Sam's smile faded a bit, and he clutched the plastic tightly in his hand before picking up a large tome and devouring it with his eyes.

When Dean was 18 and Sam was 13 he took a drag of a cigarette while sitting on his baby brother's bed, the small boy sleeping. Then he coughed as he groggily opened his eyes. "Smells bad, don't like it." The words were filled with drowsiness and Dean put the cigarette out before stroking his brother's hair until the boy fell asleep. Dean never smoked again.

Dean however- he can't give him the last of the cereal this time. Blood spilled down the elders chin, as the younger screamed against the bonds that were binding him to the wall.

Claws, pain, blood, the smell of sulfur - it all blurred into one sensation. Dean reached out a hand toward his brother as the younger screamed for him. He wants to give his brother what he wants, wants to just cast off death, like he did after the car crash that had nearly taken his life. He knows he can't though. Knows that he would never again see those spare moments when Sam was still 6 and was looking at him with soft eyes, wanting his elder brother to smile. Things were so simple then. A bowl of cereal given to Sam and a toy given to Dean, the stakes are higher now and instead Dean gives his life…because he wants his brother to live. He can't give his brother the last of the cereal ever again, there's no more to give, and dark eyes close.
