I wrote this a few years ago. I was inspired by the song "Deadwood Mountain" by Big and Rich.
note: I have actually been to Mount Mariah Cemetery where Jimmy is buried. It is a magnificent and peaceful place, Now that is.
Good Bye
Goodbye
The wind whipped thru the trees on the mountain that August day. Old friends, family really, gathered to say a tearful goodbye to the one they all knew they would lose before they met their maker.
A striking red headed woman clung to the arms of an old man, tears streaming down her face. She didn't cry because the man was gone, she cried because he didn't die in the manner he deserved to. Shot in the back. It was a heartbreaking pity.
A blond man in a suit of light tanned hides held his hat to the side of him, as he dropped a pack of playing cards on the freshly filled in grave. A man and woman, husband and wife, stood heartbroken. The man with dark brown hair and hardened eyes filled with unshed tears held the slight woman as sobs racked her chest.
Suddenly, she dropped to her knees to the earth, and screamed, "NO! No! It's not fair. He was good!" Her husband slowly knelt down, and remained by his wife's side as she released her grief.
An Indian stood off to the side. He had seen so much death in his family. He knew that before he left this plain, He would see more, and steeled himself to that fact. He placed an eagle feather on the grave, patted the old man on the back and gave the red headed woman a hug, then walked away.
The man in the tanned suit walked to the cliff of the mountain. He surveyed the town below where his friend and brother died. He silently wiped a tear away. To himself, he thought that this was a fitting resting place for his friend. Over looking this rough, colorful town, high above the noise. The man who had told the group of their brothers death had placed on a stone the epitaph, "Pard, We will meet again in the happy hunting ground, To part no more."
They saw no reason to change. The words fit. Slowly, they left, knowing that indeed, they would join their friend in the happy hunting ground to part no more.
