The school grounds found them deserted near the dark green lake that glittered under the hot sun, like the pools of black flashing dangerously on Severus' furious face as he cornered Remus against the tree; his wand stabbing the side of his throat near where his adams apple bobbed.
"Snape- I should have-"
"What? Stopped them from pulling a stunt like that? Stood up for me like a good friend would do? – but hold on? What am I to you?" They were inches away; Severus hot breath skating along Remus' face.
"Let me explain – i-i-t's not that easy –"
"No no no- you see here Lupin, even though you weren't exactly involved, you were there, all the same. And you know you're the only one that could have done something, anything- cause no- no one gives a shit a bit about me! But I thought you did," Severus growled spittle flying onto Remus' burning cheek.
"How very stupid of me indeed," he said narrowing his eyes.
"Sev-" Remus grabbed Severus' chest; the wand flew out of his hand and Remus was now trying to push him off yelling the first thing that came to his head,"you'd- you'd know if you had any- friends! If they found out you'd been hanging around with me- it's not easy to just go against them they're like my brothers- James and Sirius-"
"Your furry little club crossed the line this time! Like they haven't screwed up the past six years of my life already. But you don't know how that feels like... And you! I thought you were different, but you're just like the rest of them; just as bad."
"I felt horrible Severus… but I-I-I didn't know what to do… I'm sorry," Remus said honestly; "I was afraid."
Severus eyed him for a moment, the curve of his eyebrow more inclining as ever.
"Sorry? Sorry... you're right, I suppose I would understand if I had any friends" Severus snarled; the word exaggeratedly spoken like it was alien to him. "But I don't. Although," He paused to lick his cracked lips as Remus remained silent, pinned to the tree, not fighting the grip of Severus' hands grasping his arms tightly beside him. "I knew someone who I thought was, at least- I thought we'd come to some sort of understanding, a truce maybe, maybe even- more? Wasn't really sure but-"
Their faces were so close, noses inches away that Remus felt like whimpering.
He swallowed hard and instead let out a stifled moan after their noses just missed and moist lips came crashing down towards his, grazing him with the harshness of it all, so that his throat was parched and aching more than ever. Severus' grip was so tight on his forearms that Remus' hands and all the way to his fingertips were numbing as their tongues collided.
For Remus, it was like what he'd been waiting for had finally happened; he had been anticipating this very moment for as long as he could remember. But under the circumstances, he'd never imagined it would turn out like this. Not like this at all.
To his surprise he only yanked his arm from Severus' painful grasp and dug his fingers in his black hair pulling him closer to his thirsty mouth, when Severus abruptly tore away, panting just as much as Remus. He licked his lips and his eyes flickered back open.
"And- and one fine day… when he was all I had and needed him most… he just stood there. And he watched me."
Peering into those bottomless eyes that were filled with hurt more than anger; Remus found it incredibly hard to blink.
"And. He. Let them."
Severus finally stepped aside and walked swiftly away leaving Remus' staring into nothing in particular ahead of him and by this time, it was as if the heat turned everything to stone, as if a drought had dried up all the life, all existence in that short space of time, and the first sign of rain came from Remus' eyes.
