He could remember when his heart beat.
He could remember when it stopped.
He could remember the tears in her eyes when she felt it thump under her fingers.
But, try as he might, he could not remember when his heart broke.
He thought maybe it was before. But it couldn't be. After, then. But how long?
How long after the kiss he could not taste?
How long after the smile he could not see?
How long after the "I love you" he could not hear?
How long after she gave her heart to another did his shatter into an undeterminable amount of cutting edge pieces?
He could remember the warmth of her lips.
He could remember the comfort of her words.
And, though he tried not to, he could remember the salt of her tears at the cemetery where they buried the man who had stolen her heart from his hands.
When he woke from his nightmare, he tried to shake it from his mind.
He didn't want to, but he could remember what she could be.
And he could remember why he walked through the smoke.

A/n: So, the gist is that Angel has a dream about the future. He sees what kind of future Buffy can have and so remembers why he left her. It is set, let's say, pre Ats, post BtVS season 3.
