This is a cute thing that came to mind when I was watching my two young cousins taking a nap. Family love is just cute.
I do not own Digimon.
Hikari never needed any bedtime story or lullaby to fall asleep, even from a young age. Yuuko Yagami couldn't understand it. Her son Taichi had been a restless sleeper from the beginning, unable to sleep due to nightmares he didn't understand and could see in real life. She expected Hikari to be even worse, since she had always been such a frail child. But after the first newborn year and a half, Yuuko and Susumu slept all night with no noise from either child. This unusual occurrence finally prompted Yuuko to extremes, and she stayed up long past her normal hours to observe her children.
She waited in the darkness outside their room, a cup of herbal tea to keep her company. It wasn't until the depths of the night, when sleep dragged at Yuuko's mind that she heard a soft conversation wafting under the doorframe.
"Tai? Are you awake?" Hikari voice sounded fragile and almost broke Yuuko's heart, using the nickname Hikari had created for him when she had started to talk.
"…Yeah." Tai's voice was soft and understanding, but not tired at all. He had obviously been awake and waiting for Hikari's call.
"Can I sleep in your bed?"
"Yeah."
There was a soft squeak of bed springs, and the rustling of covers. A content sigh washed under the door, and Yuuko was almost disappointed. The reason Hikari slept so well was because she slept next to Taichi, who was the most restless sleeper she had seen?
Quietly, Yuuko cracked the door open, peering through the slight gap in at her children. Hikari was encompassed in Taichi's arms, the boy sitting with his back against the headboard, eyes closed but obviously not asleep. Hikari's head was resting on Taichi's chest, her ear resting over his heart.
Suddenly the memory rushed into Yuuko's mind.
A six year old Taichi lay pale and still in his bed, his breathing weak and almost nonexistent. He had caught what had seen like a simple flu, but it didn't pass like a normal sickness. Yuuko had woken up in the middle of the night to the sound of soft sobs coming from the bathroom. She had stumbled through the apartment to the bathroom in one of her favorite bathrobes to see Tai hunched over the toilet, the insides splattered a vibrant red. "Taichi…" The boy had looked up at her with those watery chocolate orbs, and Yuuko had screamed when he had slumped sideways as if he had no energy to stay upright any longer.
Hikari had screamed louder.
Now he was severely ill, and the doctor had said if the antibiotics he had given didn't work soon, Taichi would not see the outside of a hospital for a long time. Hikari laid next to him, pressed as close as possible to her older brother, head on his chest.
"Mom?"
"Yes Hikari?"
"Sometimes it's not there."
"What's not?"
"His heart."
Taichi had recovered soon after that, and hadn't been sick since then, like Hikari had. But the little girl had never forgotten the incident. Apparently it had made a bigger imprint on her life than Yuuko had thought.
Smiling, she softly closed the door, heading to her bed after placing the cup of tea in the sink. Susumu was sleeping in their bed, and she laid her head on his chest, his heartbeat ringing in her ear. It was extremely soothing. She thought as she slowly drifted off. It was comforting to know that he was there.
