He walked many paths. Some with me. Some on his own. But now we walked back and forth on top of a dam complex's wall.
"Tell me how you survived that tunnel again." I asked him for what seemed the hundredth time.
"I managed to fend off the infected," he started, "and get back to the bus depot on the surface. Then I retraced our steps to the motorway and I sat against the concrete. I thought about shooting my self but then I remembered what you said last fall, 'I bet there will be someone,' so I sat there for a couple of days waiting. I knew that you and Joel had already left as I saw him driving an SUV."
"Then you started your walk home."
"I didn't have a home then. I just walked to where I was most likely going to find you Ellie. It wasn't easy but I kept thinking of you. If I didn't we probably wouldn't be having this conversation."
"I don't know what I would've done without you."
"Nor do I."
I noticed something disappear behind a tree trunk not far away from the dam's wall.
"Hold up," I held my arm out in front of him, "someone's out there."
"Wait for them to get closer. I'll hold em up, you ask what their doing here."
We crouched down and waited for the person to get closer. I counted down with my fingers, three, two, one.
We stood up and Daniel trained his rifle at the unknown's head.
"What are you doing here?" I asked loudly.
Before I could answer a rifle shot went of in the distance and hit me in the shoulder that knocked me over.
"Fucking bastards!" Daniel yelled as he returned fire.
I felt blood running down my burning shoulder and I instinctively touched the wound with my hand and looked at it. So much blood. My blood.
"You alright? We heard gunshots," Daniel's friend Lucas said as he arrived with Joel.
"Oh shit," Joel exclaimed as he saw me leaning against the concrete.
"Help her." Daniel said while reloading.
"Lucas, help Dan with those bandits I got Ellie."
"Do any of you have a bandage?" Joel asked in a hurry, "she's gonna bleed out."
"Yeah in my bag," Lucas threw his bag in our direction and resumed firing.
"Ellie I need you to keep pressure on the wound."
I did as Joel said as he hastily searched through the bag for the rag that passed for a bandage.
"Ahhh, it fucking burns like shit."
"I know, I know. Ok move your hand so I can bandage it."
I let my hand fall into my lap to let Joel's caring hands tightly wrapped my shoulder in the cloth. One more shot sounded and footsteps came running towards me.
"You ok beautiful?" I winced as Daniel hugged me tightly.
"I-I think so. I feel dizzy."
"That'd be the blood loss."
"Daniel, you should take her home and clean her up. Joel and I will take over here."
"Sounds good," he looked at me, "c'mon put your good arm around me."
He crouched down beside me and a slipped my right arm around his neck.
"On three. One, two, three."
As one we stood up and I put most of my weight on him. We started walking down the stairs and back home. It was a hectic few minutes.
