It was odd really, feeling the cool liquid envelop him and pull him under. No air, no sounds, no movement of the current. Opening his eyes, he could only see black- endless black. No light, despite how bright the sun was and how cloudless it was that day.
He felt himself sink lower, the cold water pulling him farther down. He reached out hesitantly to the void, but pulled back and closed his eyes again. Let the darkness take over, it would freeze his fears, it would hide his cries, it would ease his pain-
He suddenly felt a pair of arms grab him and yank him out of the water by the torso. His eyes shot open as he saw light-very faint, but it was there. Approaching quickly-faster, faster-
Air.
He had to close his eyes as he fell to the ground forcefully by the owner of the arms. He coughed and spluttered, surprised that he failed to realize he had been inhaling water in his trip in the darkness.
"You idiot!"
Something slapped his face hard. He winced as his face shot to the side from the impact. He opened his eyes hesitantly and found himself blinking up into a pair of angry blue eyes.
"Wha-"
"You were trying to kill yourself, weren't you!?"
"I-"
"You were!"
Another slap.
Sasuke decided that it would be pointless at this point to argue, because no matter what he said, Naruto would just screech over it with a 'I can't believe you!' or 'Why did you do this?'
His gaze traveled over to the water that had once been so inviting. Truth is, he wasn't trying to do anything that would result with his life gone-he was just going for a dive and found himself lost in the darkness that not only overwhelmed his surroundings, but his own mind and soul.
"Why did you try to leave me?"
He looks up, blinking. Naruto's downcast now, face hidden by the hitai-ate that is falling off his forehead.
"What do you mean?"
"Did you really try to leave me behind?"
Sasuke frowns, rubbing his cheek slowly. "I wasn't trying to leave anyone."
Naruto looks up, glaring and angry. "Fuck, Sasuke! I saw you! I saw you in that water and you weren't coming up! You were just floating there and shit, you fucking idiot, you were going to drown! I couldn't let you do that to me! You're the only thing I have!"
There was no words that Sasuke could say that would calm the boy down. Even if he had some, the kyuubi vessel plowed on.
"Fuck, Sasuke, if you died in there I would've been going with you."
Dark eyes widened.
Blue eyes grow hollow, numb.
There is a silence, which is broken when fabric rustles from the Uchiha that sits up and grabs Naruto in a hug. He wraps an arm around him close to his shoulders, the other hand in the blond hair as he forces the blond close to his chest.
"I'm sorry for scaring you."
He pets the hair absentmindedly as he stares at the water.
"I won't leave you."
