Chapter 1: With a Little Help from my Friends
In his earlier years, Steven's social life wasn't really something anyone would consider flourishing. Not that it was necessarily his fault. Despite living in a place called Beach City, kids his age were mostly scarce (One exception being Mr. Fryman's son, who at the same time would spend most of his time at the fry shop.) if there were any at all.
However even with a life like that, Steven never seemed to mind. His dad was with him throughout his whole life, and that was all the company he needed to be happy. Whether he was giving any help he could at the car wash, learning "sweet strunming skills" as his dad called it, on his guitar, or out on a day at the boardwalk, Steven cherished every moment with Greg.
As genuine as those moments were, days that he looked forward were days he would spend with Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl. It's hard to say what he specifically liked about the gems. There was the youthful (Or more appropriately juvenile) energy that Amethyst had that always kept Steven entertained. There was also Garnet's quiet but warm openness that always made Steven comfortable.
Pearl was usually the most hesitant. Not that she disliked Steven in the least bit, there were times she tried to approach him but it was usually when he was accompanied by the other two. Steven was usually the one to approach her if he thought she was feeling lonely or upset. Nonetheless, the three of them were friends he couldn't live without.
For things to be this well was not something Greg would have ever expected, not unlike Pearl. Events such as parting with rose and the "Winter Incident", made it hard for him to trust the gems around Steven. But Greg also had to keep in mind he only knew his human half, and there were things about Steven's gem half that only they would understand. In order for Steven to grow up happily, they had to come to a point of amends. Thanks to help from Greg's caretaking tips and Pearl's short history lectures, steven always got by.
