Beauty in the Breakdown

Crimson and gold, laughter suddenly silenced. This wasn't happening. This couldn't possibly happen.

He didn't make it in time.

Her eyes widened, her heart almost stopped. He didn't save her in time. The searing pain filling every inch of her body couldn't compare to the shock, horror, disgust. Fire was consuming her veins, a coldness began to zigzag up her legs. "Alucard," was all she could say or think, her mouth open and her lifeblood pooling out. Don't give in to it, don't give up. I will not die.

The inhuman cry was unmistakable. She saw the blur of crimson and heard the continuing shrieks. He was holding her now, she sensed, barely. It was hard to register anything. Alucard had failed her. Failed. The greatest achievement of the Hellsing family. "How could you fail me?" It hurt to talk, hurt to breathe, hurt to see him panic.

"No, master, I have NOT failed you." With a roar, he sank his teeth into her neck pulling what was left into his mouth, tasting the excruciating pain of dying blood. She whimpered against him. "No- not this." But he was not following her orders anymore - ("Drink, damn you, drink.") - she was following his.

Salt, iron, an ancient taste. A vibrant explosion of color and her body screamed back to life...or death, she couldn't tell. All she knew was that she must drink more of his blood. If she was free, she could kill herself for how could she, Sir Integra Winngates Hellsing, EVER be a vampire? How dare he try to save her in this way, how dare he make her take this choice?

"No, my lady vampire, not like that. Let go of Sir Hellsing." His dark voice was a tickle in her brain and she felt like the world was black and white and he was red for lifeblood and she was blue for deathblood and she could feel him carry her away from the discarded bodies of Walter, Seras...the catholic scum were burned flesh impaled in steel. "They're all dead," she whimpered, her new teeth confusing her. "I never dreamed..."

He was now carrying her like a child, her face peering into his face (it was so much clearer, as was everything now). "I dreamed it for you, lady vampire. It's better this way."

Almost distracted with fascination, what was left of the human Integra fought with the newborn vampiress. "How can you say that?" she breathed as he stopped to pull her face closer. His mouth was on hers, tasting and sucking, blood flowing from both sides. The world could not seem to right itself.

There was something so right about his mouth, his taste, his intensity. And the part of her that hated that disquieting perception was dying with every drop of blood mixed.

She broke away. What was left of her human soul cried out, "You're killing me, Alucard. Is this what you want?"

"My dear Integra, you will never die."

"Vile demon." Sir Hellsing closed her eyes and died. The vampire opened her eyes, mouth curved in a grin. "Never."
