They were beautiful boys. All sunlight and color and dissonance. Beautiful beautiful dissonance. One was a crescendo, a wave of passionate forte that overwhelmed and stimulated. The other was a decrescendo, a whisper of silent emotion, controlled, controlled.

"I hate you," one said routinely.

"Okay," replied the other, feeling blank. Later on, he would think that hate was not love's opposite. That's good, he would think. That's good.

"I really hate you," one said again, turning to look the other in the eye.

"Okay," replied the other, not noticing. The robot in his hands did not notice, either. Chocolate sounds broke their ears.

"Do you hate me?" one asked, feeling curious and chocolate.

"Maybe," replied the other, feeling ambiguous and white.

"I do," one said, turning away.

"Okay," replied the other, not noticing.

But, oh, did he notice. He always noticed.

"I love you, Mello," Near's elbow murmured, shifting in motion to brush Mello's back.

"I love you, Near," Mello's hair replied, shifting in sway to brush Mello's ear.

They were beautiful.

"He's white," Matt said, touching the white one's hair.

"White is color," Mello replied, breaking ears with chocolate. "I hate color."

"Okay," Near said, staring at his robot.

"He's quiet," Matt said, watching the quiet one's lips.

"Silence is sound," Mello replied, breaking ears chocolately. "I hate sound."

"Okay," Near said, watching his robot.

"He's small," Matt said, kissing the small one's hands.

"So are thoughts," Mello replied. Chocolate. "I hate thoughts."

"Okay," Near said. Robot.

"I love you," Mello's eyes said, blue dancing quietly with white.

"I love you," Near's ears replied, white hearing blue's silence.

They were.

"I hate love you," Mello's grave said.

"Okay," Near's mouth replied. He left his robot in the dirt.

"I love you," Near's robot said.

"I love you, too," whispered Mello.

They.

All sunlight and color and dissonance.

Sunlight was buried.

How can there be dissonant solos?

Near heard chocolate.
