Edward is ten when he first meets Roy Mustang.
He was suffering from blood loss - and the painkillers had altered his perception - so all he really remembered was coal black hair and agate eyes. But that was more than enough. Because even through the haze of drugs he can remember the emotions in those eyes. The sheer raw emotions imprinted there. Pity, fear, though . . . there was something else in those depths, something hidden there.
He thinks it might have been respect.
He remembers the words, the promise in his deep voice. The military, a chance to fix Al, a chance to save him. Though he hardly remembered the man, nor knew him. He gave him a bright ray of hope in that obliterating darkness
And it kept him alive.
