Denials© 2017
[8/18/17 prompt: in 15 minutes write a 2-character scene where 1 tries to break thru the other's barrier of denial. Anchor it in a particular time. Use a couple with knowledge of the other: attorney/client; Dr/patient; siblings; child/parent; doorman/tenants...
The denial should be obvious: a beaten wife; misbehaving child . . . ]
"But, we're bonded for life, committed deeper, stronger than all other bonds. Why aren't we more alike? Why can't we do the same things? I know your every thought, your every desire, sometimes even before you do. Why . . .?"
"I hear you and I understand. I too, often think how wondrous it would be if we each could do all the other does. But, . . . we really can't, no matter how much we want it or you believe it. For example, you love music, but you can't write it, sing it or play any instruments. I can do all that."
"Yet we read each other's minds. I don't understand why I'm not as good or skilled as you are."
"That may be very true, Seth, but you are better than I in so many other ways. You knew we were different from the moment of our bonding Impression. You needed me to feed you vast quantities of meat from the moment of your birth, but you soon discovered your wings. You refused to see our differences from our first connection. You can fly and carry me high and far instantly. You can breathe fire. You can bespeak all other dragons and most people telepathically. I can't. You may not be human, but you are a mighty, powerful dragon. We need each other, but not to BE each other. Understand?"
A tiny, residual flame escaped. "Ohhh, I suppose." Seth huffed, not totally convinced.
Comment: "Read it again . . . It's an inviting story . . . I want to read more, know more . . . "
